Fantastic Four #11 (The past comes alive Spoilers)

Postby Punchy » Thu Aug 15, 2013 11:15 am

It was announced this week that Matt Fraction is set to leave the Fantastic Four titles, which is a crying shame really. I’ve loved FF since the very start, and this title is really only just starting to warm up. Stupid fucking Inhumans! You’re an FF spin-off anyway, you shouldn’t be biting the hand that created you! I expect Inhumanity to be pretty great, but still, it’s annoying.

Anyway, onto this issue, and already you can tell that Fraction is on his way out, as this issue is co-written by Christopher Sebela, who did pretty well co-writing Captain Marvel with Kelly Sue DeConnick, and looks to be a bit of a rising star. This issue has the Fantastic Four attempting to tackle the problem of their bodies breaking down head-on, as Val takes them to a weird planet called ‘Celeritas’. There’s a lot of weird, time-travel nonsense that happens in this issue, and I must admit, a lot of it confused me, but I do really like the central hook of a bunch of Nostalgic hipsters using time-travel bombs to try and bring back the past. That’s just a fun idea.

The rest of the time-travel elements though… eesh. Why did Johnny run into his future self from FF? Is this ‘Old John Storm’ from before he arrived in that title? Or afterwards? Too many questions! I also really liked the return of Franklin using his superpowers, I’m resigned to the fact that no writer is ever going to pull the trigger on Franklin, but it’s still awesome whenever his potential rears it’s head.

Mark Bagley’s artwork was solid as usual, but I did feel it looked a little more rushed than usual. This was another good issue of Fantastic Four, despite my confusion, but I’m just annoyed that Matt Fraction won’t be ending this story properly. Inhumanity better be worth it!

I'm glad Fraction is done. This book has been a complete snoozer since Hickman left.

Wow. Completely disagree -- I've enjoyed this run a lot, and while I understand and appreciate the fact that creators leave, I do wish Fraction was staying even a bit longer.

I'm not saying it's terrible, just boring.

It pales in comparison to the last run.

I enjoyed this issue, but I do have to say, there were too many time travel elements that weren't all that well explained.

Thank you Troy for the sig

I do also have to say that this quote"

"Fighting the future to preserve that past!"

was sufficiently corny -- I loved it. :-D

I'm only saying that because their title is taking away Fraction from the Fantastic Four titles.

Come on, the Inhumans are a spin-off from the FF, they shouldn't be doing this!

(Also, Karnak is super-lame).

That character is actually called 'Old John Storm', because's old.

The 'real' Human Torch should always be called Johnny, because he's not an old man and not pretentious like you and Hickman! :P

Just because a group of characters are a "spin-off" from another series, doesn't mean that those characters shouldn't be given a chance to shine. In recent years, the Inhumans have had a fairly rough time lately and that's a shame because they are such a diverse and unique group of individuals. With any luck, the whole 4 extra brides of Black Bolt crap will be swept under the rug and forgot about entirely as a result of this.

(Also, Karnak is super-lame).

Yeah, but come on, the Fantastic Four should always be a bigger deal than the Inhumans. They are the foundation of the whole Marvel Universe.

There are probably a lot more factors than the Fantastic Four being a bigger deal than the Inhumans that we shouldn't know about involved in this decision.

I didn't like this, or the last issue at all. I'm done with this book.
