Besides Midas, would anyone else be interested in comparing IDW's new coloring for Judge Dredd and the old editions of 1980?

As you all know, Judge Dredd was published in black and white. So we have the original version here:

Image

And then we got the colored version designed for the American market in 1981:
Image

And then the recolored version of IDW. As we can see, IDW has respected the credits from the original version.
Image

However, there seems to be a few problems with IDW's recoloring. Let's take a look at the fat woman on the first panel:
Image

In the 1981 version we can clearly see rabbit faces on her shoes, on the IDW version that detail isn't clear:
Image

In other cases, IDW does a better job, though. In this page, we have the judges in blue tones:
Image

And in the IDW version we have them fully colored. Good for that.
Image

There's a particular page, however, that's driving me crazy.

The 1981 version eliminates the Block Mania title and apparently a small panel. Comparing the two pages, I notice a lot of differences. The buildings in the background are complete and most noticeably, we can see the judges ship complete.

I'll wait for the second issue of IDW to see if I can identify more discrepancies.

That was an awesome post! Great pictures and analysis. Not sure I love the new coloring. Very interesting that Marvel retouched/redid that page of block mania. Not entirely surprising since the original Progs tell the story in 8-page chunks. I'm guessing Marvel didn't like what that did to the "flow" so they had somebody redraw/fill in that page to eliminate the "recap". Glad that IDW stuck with the original page there.

I might pick this up in trade as the release it.

Thank you! Now you know why it took me a few days to put it all together.
I was expecting to see a much better recoloring in IDW's edition. I think I might stop buying it in issue # 7, besides I still have the old editions. By the way, Marvel didn't publish Judge Dredd, it was a publisher named Eagle (which after a few years would be replaced by Quality Comics).

Anyway, Block Mania and the Apocalypse War are two of my favorite Dredd sagas, so I'd recommend you to get the trade (even if the coloring isn't perfect).

If you don't remember it right away then you don't have it. So you can buy IDW's colored version. Case Files are black and white, right?

Right. Buy you assume I've read everything I own. That's a very bad assumption! I've probably read less than half of the books on my shelves. I'll have to check on this one tonight.

Guilty as charged... I always read everything I buy almost as soon as I get it. Everything in my shelves has been read once or twice.

Oh so you have it. Well have fun reading it.

I have a number of the original Case Files (the single color trade dress, not the new ones) but they're mostly in my pile of "have yet to read".

I didn't know there were new editions of the Case Files.
I grew up reading the colored versions of Judge Dredd, so to me it feels weird to read them in black and white, even though that's how they were originally published.
