What are your favourite incarnations of Lex Luthor?

Postby glasgowceltic » Fri Aug 23, 2013 6:41 am

I love the speech Luthor gives at the start of Kreuger & Ross' Justice:

[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
Who decided we needed to be saved?

Who decided to roll out the red carpet for the saviours? That's what I want to know.

We were the forgers of the planet, the lifters of the flame. We were the dreamers and the myth-makers. We were the inventors, and the industry and the life and the blood. We were Earth's men. Not THEM.

But it's too late now. We gave it to the aliens and to the robots and to the myths that demanded with their presence that we believe in them. And bow to them. And trust them.

We discovered the atom. We created the bomb. It was our responsibility.

It didn't have to be, not fully. Not in a world populated by the otherworldly.

We should have done all we could despite the rescuers.

But we were lazy. Their very being made us lazy.

And now its all going to blow up in our collective face.

I hate to say I told you so.

But who listens to me? I'm only human.

[...]

Survival. Perhaps that is all I can hope for at this point. Our potential was stunted when Earth became the battlefield for the rest of the cosmos.

... When the so-called Justice League of America banded together because they were unwilling to allow us to bleed and suffer and learn how to defend ourselves.

... When Earth and humanity became but suburbs to the conflicts of a Galaxy.

And we realized we were no longer alone.

I've always had a special place in my heart for classic mad scientist Luthor. However, I thought it was a brilliant idea to transform him like they did in Byrne's reboot. Giving him political/financial power to offset Superman's physical power was a good play and made them equals for the first time. I didn't like fat, balding Lex, though, but I loved the kryptonite ring.

Still, I prefer criminal genius Lex, much like the All-Star version.

I have a soft spot for evil criminal scientist version too but I also really love the for lack of a better term evil Tony Stark version.

The animated DCU version does a perfect combo of the two and Clancy Brown's voicework just puts him over the top.

And before I forget Azzarello's Luthor was really great too.

The DCAU version combined the best aspects of all the different iterations.

It's a pretty tough call between the All-Star Superman version and the DCUA version.

I'll second Byrne & Wolfman's Lex. Donald Trump has spent his career mimicking this version.

Red Son Luthor was one of the best.

As opposed to mocking you for saying there will never be a more epic moment than this, then posting two moments, I'm just going to say this has both of those beat hands down:

Gene Hackman's

Clancy Brown was good too, especially when they ditched the "evil industrialist" persona.

I liked Luthor and his Mankind Liberation Front in Kingdom Come.
