Is There A Mandate Against Relatives Too?

Postby Pink_Orchid » Sun Sep 08, 2013 5:27 pm

Looking at all the DC previews, there seems to be a running theme of dead parents. And then I started wondering who of the heroes still had living relatives.

I know Babs parents are still kicking. Batwoman's dad, Blue Beetle's family as long as TPTB forget he exists, maybe Hal Jordan's brother, who else?

It's not really a mandate. Parental Abandonment is just an easy way to create drama.

"Tim Drake's" biological parents are still alive. They are just in witness protection while their son was adopted and raised by Bruce Wayne.

Jay Garrick's mom is still alive in Earth 2.

Superheroes in general tend to not have living kin, with the exception of relatives that are themselves superhuman.

I know. It just seems a little more blatant in the DCnU.

DC hated Jonathan Kent so much, they killed him off both pre and post reboot. :smt011

What Marvel hero has living, non-superpowered relatives?

Spidey's got Aunt May. After that, I'm at a loss to think who among their major characters have living kin. Maybe the new Nova and some of the other kid heroes I don't follow, but the big names tend to be orphans and only children.

Richard Rider's parents and brother are still alive.

Also, when Thunderstrike was still around, his son was a big part of his supporting cast.

I'm not arguing that so many have dead relatives. That's pretty much the standard. But DC is going out of it's way to show the relatives are dead. Instead of being a non-issue it's turning every hero/villain origin into this:

Spider-Man
Daredevil
Ghost Rider
Wasp
Hulk
Captain America
Iron Man
Black Panther

All have a dead or dying parent as a key part of their origin, either introduced originally or retroactively.

In a way, death of a parent (or parental figure) has almost been genetically encoded in superhero comics since Siegel & Shuster.
