Johns Leaves Aquaman, No Drama Ensues

In the Man Bites Dog department, a DC creator exits a book amicably. Of course, he's also the CCO.

Source: IGN

IGN is reporting that Geoff Johns will end his Aquaman run after November's Aquaman #25, the conclusion of the Death of a King storyline. Johns did not name any editorial interference as the cause of his departure, though it should be noted that Johns is DC's Chief Creative Officer, and so was unlikely to editorially interfere with himself.

"I don't know what all these creators are talking about," Johns reportedly said, in our minds. "My experience was great, and I found myself as an executive very easy to work with and accomodating to my goals and plans as a creator."

"Aquaman will be fine without me," we imagine Johns continued, "and will continue living in sin with his non-wife, Mera, who he was definitely never married to, nope, nosireebob."

Johns will continue to write the Justice League books and Forever Evil, as well as Batman: Earth One. He hopes to spend more of his free time sitting on the floor of his office and playing with action figures, which he cites as the inspiration for most of his work.

"Pew! Pew!" said Johns as his Superman action figure fired heat vision blasts at a Lex Luthor action figure. "Pwwwwwooooooooo!"

He's one of the few creators that Editorial doesn't dare antagonize; of course no drama ensues! :P

I'm not a Johns fan, but he 's done a good enough job on this book. According to the December solicits, the new writer is Jeff Parker with Paul Pelletier still handling the art. If those two are the long term creative team I'll stick with the title.

Peter David did a better job of making Aquaman interesting and important, and had a longer run, to boot. And he wrote the book without harping repeatedly on Aquaman's poor reputation due to Superfriends, like Johns did.

Right, but Peter David is a comic-book writer Par Excellence, and Johns is not.

Well that sucks. This was easily the best the character has ever been, IMO.

Hm. This may be a drop for me after #25. I mean, I'm not against giving the next creators a shot, but I could stand to drop more books...

WTF is this rank?

If it's Jeff Parker taking over then I'm more than happy. I've enjoyed Geoff Johns on the book but Jeff Parker is awesome.

Might be transitional. See upcoming Flash story in a few moments...

Well, that's unfortunate but I guess this is a pretty good reason to drop the title. Prior to "Throne of Atlantis," Aquaman was consistently one of my favorite books each month and while it's nowhere near as good as it was prior to the crossover, it has been steadily improving.

He's been talking about his "plans" plural on twitter. If it's transitional, Parker doesn't seem to know about it. I guess that means you should be ready to reset the counter.

Cool your jets, tiger :P
So far no one else has scooped Parker not being on-going. There is a "Flash" blurb at Bleeding Cool but nothing specific yet.

I just meant it hadn't been officially announced, I wasn't implying there were shenanigans. If Parker says he's the new permawriter, he's the new permawriter. Damn, you guys are paranoid. :P

Just because we're paranoid doesn't mean Dan and the Gang aren't stupid. :P
