Well, it was one of the original Image Comics, and the premise of Image at first was basically take these high profile, superstar artists from Marvel and have them start up their own books, with characters similar looking to the Marvel characters they were famous for drawing, but have them be creator owned. It was at the height of the 90s speculator boom, where everyone thought they could buy the latest #1 issue of a comic, put it in a polybag, and put their kids through college with in in twenty years. Take that for what it's worth.
If you want to start from the beginning, Amazon has this for $12: http://www.amazon.com/Spawn-Origins-Vol ... 160706071X
That would be the first six issues ever of the series, and you could continue with that series (Spawn Origins TPB) and read them in order up to about issue #100, which is a little less than halfway through the series, currently at 230-something. Those books appear to be in ongoing publication, so there's a chance they'll continue putting them out until it catches up.
