Ah, so that's what Origins is. I assumed it was some reimagining. Thanks man :)

It looks like there are a few versions of the collections but Origins is the one that is ongoing so if you intend to one day own all of them and want them all to match, that's your best bet, though you might find the older ones cheap on ebay or something. Normally the collections will have information on what comics they reprint. There was only one main Spawn volume (called just Spawn), so if the collection contains Spawn #20-30, then that's #20-30 of the regular series, so you can put it together that way if you mix and match.

I read the first 20 or so issues of Spawn and fucking hated it.

It's all flashy dark art with shitty stories.

I'd check for the Armaggedon Collections written by David Hine. Those were good issues and I don't think it really required much back information.

Sabby, may I ask if it's the character that you're interested or comics in the horror genre? As some of the people here have said, it's something that doesn't read well 20 years later. I would like to tailor recommendations to you.

I only ever read the first 25 or so issues when they originally came out because I was young and dumb. Did he ever get a real writer on there and improve the quality?

Well, didn't Neil Gaiman come in and create the character Angela that no one cares about but which Marvel made a big deal out of stealing for Age of Ultron?
