If you want to read Spawn go ahead, most of the people are correct on the overall assessment of the book but give it a chance you may find something special about it that others did not. If anything look for the first collectors edition or online version of the title so that you can at least get a taste of it so you can be careful how you spend your money. You like it buy more or get the editions you really want but at least try it out somewhere before you commit to it.

Moore, Gaiman, Sim and Miller wrote 8, 9, 10 and 11 respectively. Morrison wrote 16-18 as well.

I thought it was okay waaaay back when.

There was a Medieval Spawn 2 parter and he got revenge on an abusive dad and then I lost interest.

He could read just the first volume. It has some Morrison, Gaiman and Moore. That's the only Spawn related thing I would read.
