To be fair, Cyclops just tends to be the whipping post for shitty writing. Despite my username, I'm not a huge fan of his, but I can't help but notice how he seems to almost always be trapped in this hurricane of terrible writing and editorial interference. Claremont was going to write Scott out of X-Men, he was going to settle down with Jean and leave the X-Men. But no
, Jim Shooter wanted Jean to pay for her crimes so she had to die. "Fuck you, Jim," said Claremont, through the medium of loopholing out of the editorial mandate by creating a Not-Jean
in the shape of Maddy Pryor. Now Cyclops could settle down and have kids, which is something Claremont made happen.
Then, however, they wanted to bring back the original team and Shooter said they could only have Jean back if she was somehow absolved of her crimes as Dark Phoenix, hence the nauseatingly bad retcon of her actually being in a little pod in the sea the whole time, with Phoenix actually being a totally separate character, like a murderous Jean Grey tribute act. Because they forced Jean back, and forced Scott back with her via X-Factor, it took a dump so huge
on what was meant to happen with Cyclops that you'd need to fly Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck into space to destroy it before it landed.
This all happened because, frankly, Scott had reached the end of the line as a character and was being written out to be a happy family man. That would've been that, but the forces that be manipulated and distorted him like a Stretch Armstrong doll. That seems to have been happening ever since; he's a pretty boring guy by nature, and it's hard to do anything interesting with him, so he seems to just fill in the negative space around a series of terrible writers' plots.
