Review Group #398 - Free For All

No one with 5 means a Free For All!

Free For All Rules:  Post as many reviews as you want, but only one will count twoards your number.

TO THE REVIEWS!

______________________

Ze rules:

Post your review in the forum thread or in the comments section here on the front page.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Let me show you how it works. First, you turn the time circuits on. This readout tells you where you're going, this one tells you where you are, this one tells you where you were. You input the destination time on this keypad. Say, you wanna see the signing of the declaration of independence, or witness the birth or Christ. Here's a red-letter date in the history of science, November 5, 1955. Yes, of course, November 5, 1955...That was the day I invented time travel. I remember it vividly. I was standing on the edge of my toilet hanging a clock, the porcelain was wet, I slipped, hit my head on the edge of the sink. And when I came to I had a revelation, a VISION, a picture in my head, a picture of this. This is what makes time travel possible. The flux capacitor...It's taken me almost thirty years and my entire family fortune to realize the vision of that day... Things have certainly changed around here. I remember when this was all farmland as far as the eye could see. Old man Peabody, owned all of this. He had this crazy idea about breeding pine trees.

You died on a Saturday morning, and I had you placed here, under our tree. And I had that house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Mama always said dying was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't. Little Forrest, he's doing just fine. 'Bout to start school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth everyday. Teaching him how to play ping-pong. He's really good. We fish a lot. And everynight we read a book- and he's so smart Jenny. You'd be so proud of him, I am. He, uh, wrote you a letter, but he says I can't read it, I'm not supposed to, so I'll just leave it here for you. Jenny, I don't know if Mama's right or if its Lieutenant Dan, I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all floating around accidental, like on a breeze. But I think maybe its both, maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away.

Don’t you see the danger, John, in what you’re doing here? Genetic force is the most awesome power the planet’s ever seen, but you wield it like a kid that found his dad’s gun. I’ll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you’re using here. It didn’t acquire any discipline to attain it. You read what others have done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourself so therefore you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew it you had it. You patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunch box, and now your selling it! You wanna sell it! Well, your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could they didn’t stop [to think] if they should. No, hold on John, this is not an animal wiped out by deforestation or the building of a dam. Dinosaurs had their shot and nature selected them for extinction.

Alrught, I was going to just keep posting random movie monologues but, then I just had to read Sex Criminals #1.

Matt Fraction is currently knocking it out of the park. Hawkeye, FF, Fantastic Four. This. A very good first issue. Not as good as the perfect Zero but an interesting start and a book that seems to have a lot going on. They say Bonnie and Clyde used to get down after a job but doing it during the job...it's an interesting concept either way.

Since Infinity Heist #1 was one of the two issues that RU was originally going to go with this week. I think that's what I'll review.

Infinity Heist #1

This issue wasn't badly written. Having said that, it's not that great either. The problem for me is that heist stories always work best with a bit of humour thrown into the overall tone. Frank Tieri instead tries to write this opening issue as a more serious type of crime story. To me this combination of story type and writing tone just didn't work.

In the end, I didn't hate this issue, but I didn't particularly like it either.

It sounds interesting, but I'm not going to be able to buy a copy where I am and I've come to the conclusion that I just can't stand reading comics on a computer screen. Sadly, that means I'm going to have to pass.

Power Puff Girls #1

Its days like this I am happy I have no shame, PPG #1 was fantastic. I picked up the Buttercup cover because, well, Buttercub is teh awesomesauce.

The primary story throughout the book is MoJo JoJo coming to terms with how bad he is at being a super villain and where his life should have gone vs where it did. This leads to a predictable yet fun "reveal" on the last page.

Script wise, other than MoJo JoJo I feel the writer captured the voices of the characters well. I could "hear" the cartoon in my head as I was reading. Again, except for MoJo JoJo, who I assume would be a difficult character's dialog to write.

What surprises me is that this is a multi-part story - that just not something I associate with children's comics, and I am curious to see where this limited series goes. Good "kids" book.

8/10
