Vertigo always has a couple good books out at any given time. If DC weren't so awful they could have more but instead Image is the new home for high profile creator owned work.

I know I'm already doing something stupid with this statement but, isn't the Fables crossover only Carey using fables characters like Boy Blue in the pages of The Unwritten and thats it?

Carey and Willingham are co-writing each issue I think.

I'm no fan of Fables or Willingham, but Bass is talking shite.

Two things first off:

The Unwritten/Fables crossover is entirely stupid.

Punchy's taste is awful.

I like a number of the Vertigo titles, but, I can't help, but, think that Image is making major inroads and cranking out some titles that might have been Vertigo books 5 years ago.

So overall I'm OK with how Vertigo is doing, but, I also think it could be doing tremendously better.

Nah, I haven't picked up a Marvel book in ages...but I have noticed that too. Both Marvel and DC are using shitty high-gloss paper, and it absolutely affects the artwork printed on it as compared to a decent weight paper stock with a matte finish.

Funnily enough at the comics symposium over the weekend, artists from small self-publishers to high-profile Fantagraphics artists were talking about paper stocks and gloss vs matte, it might not matter to less observant readers but for the artists at least it's a big deal right now.

(And they all to a person HATED thin glossy paper, but it's the cheapest option for big corps and small fish alike.)

I don't know how much correlation there is between Image changing their publishing philosophy and Vertigo.

Could some of those Image books have been Vertigo books five years ago? Sure. Would they have? Who knows? I don't know how Vertigo's compensation to creators goes, and how involved WB/DC is with Vertigo books but I imagine it's not as open as Image is, so I don't know if a comparison is all that valid.

Plus, Vertigo has never had a huge lineup or anything.

Right now, we've got:

Fables
Fairest
The Unwritten
American Vampire
The Wake
Trillium
Tom Strong
Astro City
FBP
100 Bullets: Brother Lono
The Sandman: Overture
Hinterkind
Coffin Hill

I can't really think of a time when the line was much deeper. Some long-running series ended. It happens. But stuff like Scalped and DMZ all started at some point. Vertigo has traditionally gone through periods like this. And of course, it's missing mainstays like Swamp Thing and Hellblazer, but since those are still being published just under the DC line, it doesn't really matter.

Swamp Thing is still decent, Hellblazer is unreadable.

Vertigo still has about the same number of titles it always has, the market sector though has increased dramatically without it increasing. That's worth noting.

I read the first arc. It's not Hellblazer, but it's far from unreadable. It's on the lower end of my dwindling DC spectrum, but I'm still checking it out.

The only Vertigo books I'm reading at the moment are Trillium and The Wake.

Well, we already know about your terrible taste in not liking the Fables books, but the fact that you're not reading:

The Unwritten
Tom Strong
Astro City
FBP
or 100 Bullets: Brother Lono

shows what a boob you are.

I was reading The Unwritten, but I dropped it because of the crossover, I may pick it up again with the new #1.

I only want to read Alan Moore on the ABC characters, these later stories without him have always disappointed me.

I've only read the first Astro City trade, so I've missed out a lot.

Same for 100 Bullets, only read the first trade.

And no real interest in FBP, I may try the trade.
