Wow that's a pretty big storm

Postby sdsichero » Thu Nov 07, 2013 6:05 pm

Sheesh, I guess this is the year of the super typhoon. We've had landfall for pretty big storms in China/Hong Kong, Japan, and India. Now it's the Philippines and Super Typhoon Haiyan. Currently with 195mph winds... with gusts up to 235mph!

Good luck to those in the area. Salwen, keep safe.

Ugh it did hit...

Strongest typhoon of the year slams Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — One of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded slammed into the Philippines early Friday, and one weather expert warned, "There will be catastrophic damage."

The U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center shortly before Typhoon Haiyan's landfall said its maximum sustained winds were 314 kilometers per hour (195 mph), with gusts up to 379 kilometers per hour (235 mph).

"195-mile-per-hour winds, there aren't too many buildings constructed that can withstand that kind of wind," said Jeff Masters, a former hurricane meteorologist who is meteorology director at the private firm Weather Underground.

Finger of God indeed. I mean that as the power of these things, not some bullshit religious crap about God being angry.

You could find better ways of clearing your snow this winter.

This totally sucks.

'Massive destruction' as typhoon kills at least 1,200 in Philippines, says Red Cross

(Reuters) - One of the strongest typhoons ever to make landfall devastated the central Philippines, killing more than 1,000 people in one city alone and 200 in another province, the Red Cross estimated on Saturday, as reports of high casualties began to emerge.

A day after Typhoon Haiyan churned through the Philippine archipelago in a straight line from east to west, rescue teams struggled to reach far-flung regions, hampered by washed out roads, many choked with debris and fallen trees.

The death toll is expected to rise sharply from the fast-moving storm, whose circumference eclipsed the whole country and which late on Saturday was heading for Vietnam.

Among the hardest hit was coastal Tacloban in central Leyte province, where preliminary estimates suggest more than 1,000 people were killed, said Gwendolyn Pang, secretary general of the Philippine Red Cross, as water surges rushed through the city.

"An estimated more than 1,000 bodies were seen floating in Tacloban as reported by our Red Cross teams," she told Reuters. "In Samar, about 200 deaths. Validation is ongoing."
