Remender's Captain America Run

Postby Stephen Day » Tue Jan 28, 2014 5:46 pm

Having just read issue #15, I have to say that in this run Rick Remender is wearing his influences on his sleeve. The Dimension Z story was so Kirby influenced while the current story arc seems very strongly like something Mark Gruenwald would have written.

I completely lost interest in this book after the Dimension Z story line.

The quality of the story dipped a little after the Dimension Z arc ended but the new arc revolving around Weapon Minus has potential, especially Dr. Mindbubble!

This book is a steaming pile.

But by all means tell me how great an idea Dr. Mindbubble is.

I mean no offense with this question. I am legitimately curious about the answer.

Why are you still reading this series if you hate it so much?

Remender is just one of those writers whose stuff I've never been able to enjoy.

Then you need to read his Cap run like yesterday. It's his best work.

I haven't missed an issue of Cap since the fifth grade (#350 - 1989), I've been through bad runs before (Reiber's run on the Marvel Knights' series always tops my list), and just because the book has what I feel is a poorly matched writer doesn't mean I'm going to miss an issue, at least not yet.

What's sad is I really liked Remender's run on Venom. Probably the best Venom comic Marvel ever published, and I think he cemented Flash Thompson over Eddie Brock as the character of Venom, which is more than I ever expected. Venom has always been Eddie to me until that series. Never cared for the Mac Gargan run in the suit either.

With Cap though, I don't think he gets the character. First, Steve's already a man out of time. There was no reason for Remender to spend a year to make him, what? More of a man out of time? Ridiculous. I found it pointless, mostly ignored throughout the rest of the Marvel U books running at the time (Avengers, Infinity, anytime he showed up in Superior Spiderman), and really did nothing to advance the character. If anything it set the character back. Now I'm not saying it was Capwolf bad, but its in the same conversation.

The Nuke story I was actually enjoying. Even when Falcon had to hold Cap back from becoming judge, jury, and executioner. Then came issue #15. Right up until the explosion of the SHIELD facility I actually thought the book had a new writer, or at least Remender was sober when he wrote it, but then... Dr Mindbubble... the psychedelic Super Soldier appeared and I totally went...

So yeah I'm sure the day will come when I no longer feel compelled to not miss an issue, but as I said before I'm just not quite there yet.

Remender is usually at his best when he is allowed to cut loose and tell completely off the wall sci-fi goodness. I can certainly see why that wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea but I'm excited about the potential for an LSD-laced super soldier. Remender won't be on the title forever but I'm enjoying the ride while he's on it just like I enjoyed Brubaker's run before it. Hell, even Brubaker attempted some crazy sci-fi stuff toward the end of his run.
