As always, I can't control what comes after this, so please, BEWARE. THERE COULD BE SPOILERS LATER IN THE THREAD.
But I never spoil on Release Day, so others can read this stuff. I just offer some general impressions of what I read, for those who might be on the fence about picking up an issue.
So, here we go:
This was...OK. The simple stuff first: The art was really, really nice on some pages, and overall, it holds up well. I'm not too familiar with Marcus To's work, and for whatever reason, I thought he struggled to hold his form when he was drawing someone named Sun Girl -- either a new character or one I am completely unfamiliar with -- but overall, the book looks nice.
As for the story: For those who have read comics any period of time at all, it's New Team Book 101.
A. They're not a team yet
B. The threat that will unite them does some heinous things
C. Some new characters are introduced with some mysteries attached
So on and so forth.
Christopher Yost's track record, to my mind, speaks for itself -- the guy is totally capable of writing team books very, very well.
I don't want to go overboard and call this a "must-buy," but if you're looking for a new series or solid read that leads into the next issue of an ongoing, this definitely won't be the worst book you could pick up
*Sniff, sniff* "Damn it, Diana...If I'd known they would trade us in for a JT Krul-written Captain Atom and "The Savage Hawkman," I'd have let Superboy-Prime destroy all reality.""Superman flies and is really strong...what the fuck else do you need to know?!"
