New Warriors #1 (Spoilers to come, but not on Release Day)

Postby ElijahSnowFan » Wed Feb 19, 2014 6:10 pm

As always, I can't control what comes after this, so please, BEWARE. THERE COULD BE SPOILERS LATER IN THE THREAD.

But I never spoil on Release Day, so others can read this stuff. I just offer some general impressions of what I read, for those who might be on the fence about picking up an issue.

So, here we go:

This was...OK. The simple stuff first: The art was really, really nice on some pages, and overall, it holds up well. I'm not too familiar with Marcus To's work, and for whatever reason, I thought he struggled to hold his form when he was drawing someone named Sun Girl -- either a new character or one I am completely unfamiliar with -- but overall, the book looks nice.

As for the story: For those who have read comics any period of time at all, it's New Team Book 101.

A. They're not a team yet
B. The threat that will unite them does some heinous things
C. Some new characters are introduced with some mysteries attached

So on and so forth.

Christopher Yost's track record, to my mind, speaks for itself -- the guy is totally capable of writing team books very, very well.

I don't want to go overboard and call this a "must-buy," but if you're looking for a new series or solid read that leads into the next issue of an ongoing, this definitely won't be the worst book you could pick up

*Sniff, sniff* "Damn it, Diana...If I'd known they would trade us in for a JT Krul-written Captain Atom and "The Savage Hawkman," I'd have let Superboy-Prime destroy all reality."

"Superman flies and is really strong...what the fuck else do you need to know?!" -- Hitler, expressing his displeasure about DC rebooting and complaints about continuity

this one had me hooked within 5 pages, simply for
[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
the High Evolutionary killing Bova, the Ani-Men female cow who served as midwife to Wanda and Pietro's births (a character I have for absolutely no reason whatsoever always held a soft spot for ever since my childhood and the Yesterday Quest and the first Vizh & SW mini-series...just one of those conepts that is so out-there and random that it HAS to be innately comic-booky) on page 1, and then following that up with the inclusion of my very favorite of the FF's more obscure villains, Salem's Seven
. Yost could've written about bad stock tips for the next 15 pages and i'd have still been all in.

I thought that was [blackout]Bova[/spoiler], Chap. Glad to see it was.

Didn't like the issue, though. I picked this up because I loved Yost/To on Red Robin. I think a lot of the appeal of that series for me, though, was that I gave a shit about Tim Drake. Don't really care about any of these characters, and this first issue did nothing to change it for me. I'm going to save my money for other All-New Marvel Now titles, but this'll make a fine read on Marvel Unlimited.

I thought my post made it clear I like that stuff. I just have never really been able to put my finger on why I like that particular citizen of Wundagore.

I totally thought "GFY" was "Good For You" and not "Go Fuck Yourself."

Those two phrases have VERY different meanings.

Sun Girl was a Golden Age heroine created at the same time as Namora and Venus. She was a sometimes sidekick to the Human Torch. Had her own book for three (very hard to find) issues. Other than a few appearances in other books she disappeared.

They are just using the name, probably just to remind DC it's theirs.

Why do the Evolutionaries remind me of another character? Maybe it's AoA Sunfire but there's another one on the edge of my mind I can't remember.

I thought they looked like the Iron Man armor from the end of Fraction's run.

That's right, and I think Zeke Stanes version of the Living Laser.

Maybe they remind you of another character because they have appeared before and fairly recently? They actually first appeared in the "First to Last" storyline that started in the Giant-Sized issue of X-Men from 2011, ran from X-Men #12 - 15, and finished with the X-Men: First to Last one shot.

But yeah, they do look a lot like AoA and Horsemen of Apocalypse Sunfire.

I was really on the fence about whether or not I wanted to pick this up this week. It was ok but considering how great most of the other books that Marvel has been putting out lately have been, this issue was really just subpar.

First to Last! That's where I'd seen them, the covers BTW not the actual issues.

To be fair, given how many creative changes the X-Men have gone through and over a hundred issues being pumped out since 2011 it's easy to forget them. Yost was just filler until Gischler returned and I dropped that book after the horrible vampire story.
