Magneto #1 *On Autopilot Spoilers*

Postby Zechs » Thu Mar 06, 2014 9:51 pm

An alright first issue that continues were we left Magneto in Uncanny X-Men basically going after anyone whose ever done anything to a mutant. We open to a newbie who literally was a witness to Magneto basically executing some Doctor. First tiny strike against the book is I'm kind of disappointed this witness wasn't being interrogated by anyone from S.H.I.E.L.D. basically the Gerard to Magneto's Kimble. Because I kind of want to see a normal S.H.I.E.L.D. agent hunting Mags down always one step behind him adding to the drama.

Though when we switch to the actual main character of the book and it's basically Magneto's PoV from here on out. We learn that the Doctor isn't such an innocent fellow and kind of helped various anti-mutant hate groups. So basically he deserved the horrible fate Mags gave him. So the setup of the book begins with Magneto hunting down anti-mutant criminals.

So this is Dexter, yet with a 24 twist since Magneto is basically Jack Bauer. In probably my favorite scene of the book we have him talk about himself and the next person he's planning on visiting a serial killer whose murdered a ton of mutants and Magneto fears will slip through the cracks of the human justice system. Add the small tension with him talking to the maid who knows he's a wanted man just not probably Public Enemy #1.

Then we get him scoping the police station where this serial killer is being held with a neat little highlighted panels showcasing the various metals around Magneto. Of course eventually he unleashes hell to get to the killer. Only to find TWEEEST the serial killer is kind of an innocent. Okay not so much an innocent but a Prime/Omega Sentinel who then starts attacking him.

Eventually due to the metal in his system, Magneto yanks the parts out but of course by doing so murders the man. This could have been done better but it still kind of works setting up the first arc for the series.

I do like the balance this book has with Magneto taking on the X-Force role which really is the character's best direction and I'm curious where Bunn will take it. Other than that it's a good book. Not fantastic or knock your socks off like She-Hulk this week, but still a good read.

Kind of strange to see a Magneto book on this level. It is a big change of pace from stories where he's megalomaniacal, grandiose, larger than life character whereas no he's hunting people vigilante style from hotel rooms.

Easily the best thing Cullen Bunn has ever written.

the Sixth Gun says you need to kindly STFU. this was nowhere CLOSE to the level of awesome that permeates that book month in and month out.

I've only read one issue (it was a free issue) and I have to agree with that. This was just alright, nothing spectacular but just alright. It didn't blow my mind.

Fact.

This was a decent first issue but it was nowhere near as good as the average issue of The Sixth Gun.

I really wish that Marvel would have been able to get Paolo Rivera to work on the interiors of this book instead of just the cover. Walta's art wasn't horrible or anything, it just felt uneven, especially the opening scene and the action sequences near the end. So while the art wasn't doing this book any favors, The Sixth Gun has warranted Bunn enough good will from me to give this series another issue or 2 before I make up my mind.

Do you still work at a comic shop? If you do and you are looking for something new and/or different to read, you should see if they have a copy of the first volume of The Sixth Gun, "Cold Dead Fingers," in stock. It should be relatively inexpensive and it's a pretty fun read.

No way, dude. Obviously only the most recent thing one reads counts as "easily the best"a writer has ever written.

By TheBass' logic, THE AUTHORITY: KEV is easily the best thing Garth Ennis has ever written. :P

The bass only reads one publisher.

Just like he only watches one channel, listens to one record label, and only watches movies from one studio.

Not only is TSG not a book with characters older than you, but it's the work of an indy hack who is disloyal to Spider-Man
