SXSW: Marvel Getting Into the Civil War Documentary Business

Ken Burns is gonna be pissed! Oh wait, it's not that kind of Civil War?

Source: Marvel.com

At the South by Southwest festival last weekend, Marvel announced a new documentary series titled Tales to Astonish, which aims to explore the real-life topics which were addressed in simplistic, ham-fisted metaphors in Marvel's various super-mega-crossover events. For instance, the first doc in the series will focus on 2006's Civil War, which Marvel Vice President of Really Obvious Shit John Cerilli points out was inspired by the Patriot Act. Yes, you wouldn't know it from the rampant mischaracterization, gaping plot holes, and mustache-twirling villain behavior of the pro-registration side, but Civil War was a thoroughly nuanced social and political allegory. It really was a literary masterpiece on the level of something like George Orwell's 1984.

Or not. In any case, Eric Drath, who directed HBO's sports documentary Assault in the Ring, will be slumming it in the director's chair for this project. No word on when it will launch yet, but future documentaries in the series will cover other Marvel stories, with Marvel's entire history fair game for topics.

Hm. Maybe I should re-read Civil War, because I didn't interpret it the same way as others have.
