The Turtles return to NYC to prepare for The Foot!
Beginning a new arc following the events of Northampton, IDW Publishing releases Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #33! Written by Tom Waltz from a story by Waltz, Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow with colors by Ronda Pattison, this issue sees the return of fan favorite Mateus Santolouco! The A cover by Santolouco features The Turtles standing menacingly in an alley seemingly right before Michelangelo causes a ruckus, while the B cover by Eastman is classic Turtles with the team set to pounce upon a group of thugs cast against a cityscape.
Back in New York City, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are getting back into the groove of things after their time away in Northampton, to be ready to face The Foot Clan again. Meanwhile, Casey Jones is still troubled over his father Hun’s involvement with The Purple Dragons.
After an action-packed opening grabbing your attention, Waltz, Eastman and Curnow take it slow, reintroducing The Turtles back into NYC. This issue is dialogue-heavy with some great character moments, especially between Donatello and April, as well as Casey and Hun. We get a glimpse into the warped way Hun thinks what he’s doing is truly for himself and how much he cares about Casey, so much so that you start to feel pity for him.
Mateus Santolouco excels in conflict, whether it’s physical or emotional. The opening is paced perfectly and thrilling without even showing The Turtles, highlighting their maxim of being silent and disciplined. The conversation between Brooklyn and Hun underlines how various subtleties in facial expressions can really make a scene work. The collages of all the different memories inside Hun’s head are a clever design by Santolouco. Plus, I’m happy to see Bebop and Rocksteady anywhere, even if it’s for just a few panels.
This is a great jumping-on point for new readers as The Turtles are adjusting to life back in New York City, while Casey Jones’ relationship with his father gets further explored. Being a relatively quiet issue ending on a somber note, I’m looking forward to The Turtles finishing their training and getting back to fighting The Foot!
