Kurtzman extends agreement

Source: Kurtzman Signs CBS Deal to Expand TREK TV Development

Alex Kurtzman recently took over as showrunner for the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery. CBS apparently likes what he is doing as they have "extended his production agreement" through the year 2023. The company gave the official word on his Star Trek involvement with the following statement:

As part of the new production deal, Kurtzman will supervise the expansion of CBS' "Star Trek" franchise for television, developing new series, mini-series and other content opportunities, including animation.

Unofficially, there are some rumblings about what these project are. According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of the projects may have the involvement of Sir Patrick Stewart, possibly reprising his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. It's been more than a generation since Picard's Enterprise, will we be treated to Star Trek: The Next Next Generation?

Variety brings rumors of four Trek-related projects in development:

  • A Starfleet Academy series from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz (Runaways); this is an idea bandied about as far back as the 1980s.
  • A secret limited series.
  • A limited series involving genetic superman, Khan Noonien Singh. This is possibly what Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyers has been working on aside from producing Discovery.
  • A secret animated series.

Is any of this true? Well, that Kurtzman has extended his contract is, but as for the rest, we'll just have to wait. It might not be too much longer. Whatever we get, it's a good bet it won't be on broadcast TV. We'll see…

It would be nice to see Patrick Stewart reprise his role before he goes. He IS getting up there in age, after all.

I hope this happens, because I want to finally see Picard order Number One to do Number Two....

And maybe order Earl Grey cold, with extra sugar.

Wouldn't mind a Khan miniseries, as long as it was actual Khan, and not that other one. :?

It was done in the 1990s:

I could see a Star Fleet Academy show featuring a semi-retired Picard as one of the instructors. That would make a lot of sense.
