American Gladiators

Postby kingbobb » Mon Jan 07, 2008 10:44 am

Ok, honestly now, who watched it?

We did, the first hour, anyway. I'm sure we'll watch the second soon. It's pretty much the same...more fire and explosions, and the gladiators are even more over the top.

It's nice to see that it's basically the same show. It worked for a long time, by TV standards, during it's first run.

Yeah, and some of the new stuff was cool too.

I quistion if it will survive on prime time network TV, though.

It was always the kind of thing that was on Saturday afternoon.

The next one is on tonight, it's regular night.

While production was done on this before the WGA strike, I have to wonder if it would have been a prime-time show...and a Monday nighter, at that...if not for the strike?

Not for me really. Then again, I despise wrestling.

Heck yeah I watched.

But the really messed up in not having Crush in the Earthquake. She's an MMA fighter and could completly dominate in that event. Speaking of, that was awesome!

The only major problems were few. The gladiators seemed to not be well trained, the guy in Joust really sucked. No gladiaotrs in the Eliminator. WTF? And the changes to Assault. they only have a minute and they have to run through the course and have to load their weapons, that really sucked.

What gladiators did you guys like? I liked Wolf, I don't remember there ever being a scruffy gladiator and he was the only one that showed any character. Crush of course and Helga.

Also...

The Eliminator was brutal. Having to climb the cargo net must have been tough.

And I'm getting behind Spider Monkey to win the whole thing.

I really dug it, brought back a lot of memories and seems like a pretty nice family-friendly addition to primetime television.

Was the Eliminator that much harder than the original or were the contestants just "weaker"?

I think it had to do with having to climb the cargo net totally soaked and having the treadmill at the end.

No - it went into production and filmed after the writers were already on strike. Just good timing on NBC's part.

My biggest objection to American Gladiators was that it gave rise to a British spin-off, a show that was awful beyond my ability to adequately explain. Put it this way - this guy was marketed as the 'bad boy' of the Gladiators:

Image

He was called Wolf, but he looked like someone's embarrassing dad down the local sports centre. Ugh.

That's freakin' funny....in the new version there's a guy called Wolf as well...and he looks alot like that, just with wilder, blonder hair, and more muscular.

HAHA! They're borrowing idea back from Britain! :-D

Having said that, I bet the new Wolf is under 40. Our guy was pretty old...
