Stuff in the same vein as 20th Century Boys and Pluto.. more serious stuff, with good non-kiddy style art..
I added Monster to the list, already..
Here are some that I dig that come to mind:
Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (Dark Horse)--It's about a group of seminary students that discover they have various unique talents that allow them to find dead bodies, talk to them, and help them fulfill one last request. Part horror, part sitcom. Very, very good.
MPD Psycho (Dark Horse)--By the same writer as Kurosagi. This is about a detective with multiple personality disorder (MPD), one of which is a serial killer. Why does he have a barcode on his eye? Major conspiracy ensues. Some very brutal stuff in this. Great book
Battle Royale (Tokyopop)--Postmodern Japan in which evil government sets a class of junior high students (half of whom look like they're 25) on an island, arms them, and tells them they must kill their classmates. There can only be one winner. Extremely brutal/violent but darn good.
Death Note (Viz)--Demon intentionally drops a notebook at the feet of the smartest high school senior in Japan. If you write a person's name in the notebook, that person dies. Starts out as a cat and mouse game with a brilliant detective, but I understand it devolves into something else at some point. I'm only 3 volumes in and it's been great.
Gantz (Dark Horse)--Some people that die find themselves brought back to life by a mysterious orb named "Gantz" that arms them and has them chase and kill aliens in some type of bizarre game. But are they really alive? Very cinematic manga.
Uzumaki (Viz)--Horror story involving spirals. Very creepy. Also good by the same creator--Gyo, which is about killer fish on stilts (no joke).
