Gary expanded into too many non traditional markets, for sure.

However, some of them have thrived.

And some of them, like Florida, Tampa, Nashville, Atlanta and Phoenix need to be aborted.

I think a lot has to do with business community support as much as fans. Nashville struggles because it doesn't have business community as strong as a city like Atlanta, which has several Fortune 500 companies HQed here.

Atlanta is on the deathwatch in their own right, primarily because of the extreme apathy of the city's sports fans.

Gee, who could have predicted that Atlanta would be a shitty market? Oh yeah, FUCKING HISTORY. Remember the Atlanta Flames?

I can't wait for the day with Tiny Gary has to shake hands with Jim Balsillie and talk about how excited he is to see the Waterloo Blackberries.

A kitchner team will kill the Sabres, which would be a tragedy.

There's support down here. The problem is that the ownership group is a total bag of goobers, who've about sued themselves out of business.

Mabye a reason Bettaman (sp, but I don't really give a $#!t about him that much anyway) doesn't want another Toronto area team.

It would be a tragedy, but I don't think that's the case. It might hurt the sabres, but what's going to kill the sabres is that western new york is in the toilet.

BUT, a Kitchener/Waterloo team would be very successful, which is good. Can't have too many successful teams in the NHL. Unless apparently, you are Tiny Gary.

Islanders owner Charles Wang says he regrets buying the money-losing NHL team nine years ago. "If I had the chance I wouldn't do it again," Wang said, according to a published report. Citing the team's annual audited financial reports, it was reported that Wang has spent $208.8 million -- an average of $23 million per year -- to keep the team operating. He also spent $74.2 million when he and Sanjay Kumar bought the club and assumed $97 million in liabilities. "His numbers are real," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "Yes, we're aware the Islanders lose money, a significant amount of money. And it goes back to the team's need for a new arena." Wang said he initially assumed Nassau Coliseum would either be refurbished or replaced within a few years, but his proposed $3.7 billion Lighthouse Project has been held up and is still under review by the Town of Hempstead.

30 teams sounds like a bit excessive for hockey.

1) Old News
2) The Town really needs to approve the project.
3) There's no shortage of available owners and properties in the NY Area to give the team a new home.
4)You DON'T LEAVE NEW YORK FOR KANSAS FUCKING CITY.

Yeah, there's no way the Islanders leave the New York area, but at the same time, the league really does have its head up its asses to bank on new arenas. If the Islanders didn't get one when times were good, I don't see anything new on the horizon.

It would probably be best for the league if the following teams were folded.

Florida Panthers
Tampa Bay Lightning
Phoenix Coyotes
New York Islanders
Atlanta Thrashers

The New York Islanders are the most successful franchise outside the original 6.

Hell, they've won as many cups as half the O-6.

They aren't going anywhere, sorry.

Tampa has a Cup. I don't think they disappear.

I can see Nashville going away.

I just put the Islanders on there to fuck with you. Tampa has a cup but do they have a real fanbase? Nashville should be gone too.
