US Presidential Race

Postby David Bird » Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:16 am

My distant past as a poli sci student rears its head up every so often, and of course a presidential campaign is one of those times. I have been blogging fairly consistently on the subject (today's entry: 'Good Weekend For Obama'), and I may include some links to those thoughts instead of just re-posting them, but I thought I'd start a discussion thread here.

Huckabee does come across as a really likable guy, but if he's on a Republican ticket, you can give the win to the Democrat. I like Huckabee slightly better than Clinton and Obama, but that's not saying much at all.

My gut tells me that Obama will not only win the Democratic nomination, but the election as well.

I wonder how Huckabee would stand against Clinton.

Poorly. He may be likable, but his politics are still kind of scary to many people.

It really depends on how strong the evangelical right is. According to some people, they're controlling America and will for awhile however I don't believe that so I would give the win to Clinton. That said, if the elcetion actually comes down to that, I'm voting for Dukakis.

I'm thinking more in terms of how unliked Clinton is and what would be the repercussions to the party's chances if some sort of procedure wrangling gave her the nomination over Obama. He has led her in the number of actual delegates won since Super Tuesday, and her current lead exists only on the basis of superdelegates she has gained since then. She has a 27 delegate lead and another 31 members of the party establishment have announced their support for her since Feb 5. There is also the question of what will happen to the Michigan and Florida candidates. A memo from the Obama camp was leaked that concluded that if the margin of candidates remains this thin until the convention, the establishment will give the candidacy to Clinton. Which is probably true and would probably be fatal. So many new voters are participating because they want change and she won't bring that.

it's also pretty interesting when you look at Obama's growing popularity.

when he won his first states when this contest started, voters saw that they could actually picture him as a winner and a solid option to carry the national election. from that point onwards, the man has simply been gaining momentum.

people started coming out for him, and as soon as the chocies were narrowed between Barack and Hilary, it was even clearer who was the candidate who actually represented more of the same, and who was the one who could perhaps change things up a bit and bring some progress into US Politics in one way or another.

also, the way Bill Clinton insulted Obama when he finally got into the fray has clearly caused a backlash toward his wife's candidacy.

interestingly enough, Joseph Stiglitz mentioned in an article recently that in this year's Davos meeting, Hilary Clinton was mentioned as "the establishment's candidate of choice"... over any Rep or Dem.

make you wonder, huh?

I'm sad to even say this, but my gut says Obama might actually win the Nom, which I hope he DOES...

But said gut also says he loses the general election.

i think that with Barack it's all a matter of seeing if he has enough TIME to bring the election home. he's clearly growing in numbers at a pretty damn impressive rate... but does he have enough time for these numbers to surpass Clinton and her alliance with the superdelegates?

it's all about time.

if he does go against the Reps, let's see...

Barack versus McCain?

Barack versus Huckabee?

can you actually see this charismatic young man being trounced by either one?

No. But I also didn't see the current president winning one term, let alone two.

I think times have changed, though. Both of Bush's wins were against pretty uninspiring challengers, and both were very close calls as well. Also, let's not forget McCain's age - the electorate may not want to elect someone who may not live through two terms. Harsh, perhaps, but true.
