Review Group Week 171 - The Boys: Herogasm #1

I know I'm 33 and all, but still, when I grow up I want to be Jimmy McNulty. Seriously, my backlog of trades has grown into a mountain while I've been burning through The Wire which I just finished up Sunday night and am already halfway through the first season again. Awesome show with amazing characters. Fuck fuck fuck mortherfuck fuck me fuck fuck fuck.

I'm also working my way through Fringe. Anna Torv's hotness totally makes that show. Enough rambling? I hope so. Now I know why Yoni stuck to insulting people most of the time.

The Boys: Herogasm #1
as selected by 48THRiLLS
Writer: Garth Ennis

An evil so profound it threatens all mankind... the mightiest heroes on the planet uniting to defend us all... a secret crisis of such utter finality that a countdown to civil or infinite war seems unavoidable... but have you ever wondered what really happens during Crossovers? The Seven, Payback, Teenage Kix, Fantastico and every other supe on Earth team up for an annual event like no other... and where the supes go, can a certain "five complications and a dog" be far behind? Vought-American prepare to make their move, in a story that will change the world of the Boys forever: Herogasm #1.

The Last Days of Animal Man #1
as selected by Starlord
Written by Gerry Conway
Art by Chris Batista and Dave Meikis
Cover by Brian Bolland

Is Buddy Baker losing it all? Everyman hero Buddy Baker has fought hard for our world, and for his family. But by the year 2024, the Earth has seen better days: The heroes are growing tired, the villains have grown nastier and Buddy's own hometown of San Diego has struggled for years to recover from a cataclysmic typhoon. His children have grown and his marriage has gotten colder… and now, as San Diego faces the most vicious Super-Villain it's seen in years, his powers are starting to fail him! Without his powers, without his family – who is Buddy Baker? Can he still be a husband? Can he still be a father? Can he still be Animal Man? And more importantly, can he even survive the bloodthirsty plan his arch-rival's progeny has in store for him?

Comics legend Gerry Conway (TV's Law and Order) makes his return to DC with this can't-miss miniseries

DC Universe | 32pg. | Color | $2.99 US

If you would like to join the group it's easy. Just post a review and I'll add you to the member's list. As long as you stay active, eventually it will be your turn to make a pick.

With $4 comics becoming the norm, the economy being what it is and the growing popularity of mail order services the Review Group recognizes that it's becoming harder and harder to commit to participating each and every week. As long as you can post one review per calendar month you will stay in the member's list. It doesn't matter if you post your review the week of it's release or if you post it later. Going forward, there is no such thing as a "late" review.

The only request I make with the new format is that if you don't plan on posting a review or if you're going to be posting late is that you drop a note in the thread so that I can keep track of who is active and who isn't. The Spreadshee of Doom is thorough, but it can't read your mind.

Image
Comics are to be scored on a scale from 1-10. 1 being suck, 10 being a damn good comic. Beyond that, there's no right or wrong.

Image
If it's your week, you must announce your selection by 5pm EST the day Diamond releases it's shipping list. If you do not announce your pick at that time, I will add a poll to the thread that will remain open until 12pm EST so that the group can make the selection for that week. To ensure that you know it's your week, I will PM you when Midtown's list goes live on Thursdays.

Totally right about The Wire, best thing ever.

'You going to look out for me Sergeant Carver? You going to look out for me?'

Haven't seen Fringe, but what I read about the Finale was interesting, may have to go back and investigate.

Herogasm! It's going to be sick.

Unless I inadvertently stumble into a LCS this week, I'm going to hold off on reviewing this until my box-o-comics gets here next week. Money's a bit tight to be double dipping at the moment.

I am hoping though that Ennis cranks up the shock for this series, as the main title has felt a bit tame since Hughie got his wings. That probably says more about me than it does G-Wiz though. :?

I watched the first two when they aired, but couldn't get into it.

After hearing about the finale I decided to give it another shot and 5 episodes in and I'm liking it a lot. It feels like the X-Files mixed with a bit of 4400 if 4400 hadn't had to give away the hook in the mini-series.

Come on, #29 was fucking brutal, and what happened to Pre-Wiz in #30 was shocking.

Violence doesn't shock me hardly ever.

Haven't read 30 yet.

It's an analog of the X-Men. Of course it was going to be a pedophile sex ring, it practically is in the Marvel universe already.

I enjoyed Fringe, I thought the relationship between Walter and Pacey was the best thing about it... I never really got into X-Files so maybe that is why I don't see the comparison.

...I will agree with you about The Boys seeming tame, I know I should be shocked but the shocking stuff before was funny so you could laugh at it and be shocked... I am not sure if pedophilia is funny, I will say what happens at the beginning of 30 made me laugh.

The way they go about dealing with the situations are different, but the initial monster of the week style setup at the beginning of each episode is similar.

I think Ennis handled the G-Wiz stuff pretty well with...
his progression from the mutual masturbation circle jerking to the child abduction/molestation origin, but maybe he could have sped it up an issue to keep Hughie from coming off as naive as he did
My only complaint with The Boys is that it goes over the top so often that you can become desensitized to the shocking elements in the book so much so that when it tackles an issue like pedophilia it loses some of it's impact.

I agree with that, I will admit to reading this book to see what shocking thing Ennis will do next and maybe that is why I was a little down on the last arc... I also wanna see more of The Boys vs. The Seven.
I am pretty much getting Herogasm for the sole reason of it hopefully being utterly ridiculous and over the top.

Look at the cover! Can it be anything else!

This is Ennis in 'The Pro' mode.
