You know what's awesome? Having the week off. You know what's not awesome? Windows Vista. I got a new desktop pc yesterday and it has me ready to suck off a shotgun. Windows 7 early download, here I come. Anywho, it's 8am and I don't have to work today and I'm already awake. Fuck all of you. In July, DC Comics gives a fresh twist to a grand comics tradition with WEDNESDAY COMICS, a new, weekly 12-issue series by some of the greatest names in comics today!

If you would like to join the group it's easy. Just post a review and I'll add you to the member's list. As long as you stay active, eventually it will be your turn to make a pick.

With $4 comics becoming the norm, the economy being what it is and the growing popularity of mail order services the Review Group recognizes that it's becoming harder and harder to commit to participating each and every week. As long as you can post one review per calendar month you will stay in the member's list. It doesn't matter if you post your review the week of it's release or if you post it later. Going forward, there is no such thing as a "late" review.

The only request I make with the new format is that if you don't plan on posting a review or if you're going to be posting late is that you drop a note in the thread so that I can keep track of who is active and who isn't. The Spreadshee of Doom is thorough, but it can't read your mind.


Comics are to be scored on a scale from 1-10. 1 being suck, 10 being a damn good comic. Beyond that, there's no right or wrong.


If it's your week, you must announce your selection by 5pm EST the day Diamond releases it's shipping list. If you do not announce your pick at that time, I will add a poll to the thread that will remain open until 12pm EST so that the group can make the selection for that week. To ensure that you know it's your week, I will PM you when Midtown's list goes live on Thursdays.

This title captures that spirit again. Beyond just the news print stock, it has a different look on the shelf with its folded up format that becomes a giant page not quite as tall, but wider than a typical modern day broadsheet. It looks like something you might be handed in a metropolitan area, spouting the artistic events and left-sided politics of the area.

Then there are the stories themselves... written and drawn by the brightest stars working in comics today. Names like Neil Gaiman or Brian Azzarello, Michael Allred or Paul Pope. The characters range from DC’s iconic trinity to more obscure treasures like Kamandi. And like the Sunday funnies of my youth, there is a little something for everyone. An example for the most incredulous, there is even a soap-styled Iris West story that matches the melodrama of Sally Forth.

The art is the first thing you notice about the book: the circles filled with teasers of the content inside on the front cover; the amazing visuals of Kyle Baker’s Hawkman... even beyond that though, this is newsprint, but such a dense stock that the lines and colors aren’t muddied like a tattered copy of a Marvel Transformers comic. No, even Bermejo’s painted Superman story holds up. It rivals Ross on glossy paper for sheen and quality.

I liked it. Except for Wonder Woman, it is 100% set up, but it works and I am just excited for the next issue as I was for this one.

But first, the bad news. It’s on newsprint.

The good news? Who cares if it's on newsprint? It’s what’s ON the paper that counts and this book has a winner on every page…

Wonder Woman – Very well done but it gets the lowest score in the book (C). Maybe it will improve

no, they used a non porous newsprint stock. there is no color or line bleeding. The Bermejo piece looks like Ross colored it on glossy paper even.

One odd aspect about the coloring in it tho... Sgt Rock - the 'brightest' feature (color) is also one of the most 'brutal' (story).

yup, no staples. Quarter fold. It is not as tall as a broadsheet but a little wider.
It is smaller than the Little Nemo in Slumberland Many Splendid Sunday Hardcovers, if you have ever seen those.

It also will need golden bags and boards for you collector types. Collector types will want two copies as it is near impossible to keep mint after it is opened.

no, not really. Palmiotti and Conner even behave. Use your judgement on Sgt Rock, it is kind of grusome, but not really explicit.

Comparing the grade of paper on Wednesday Comics to the Superman strip run in today's USAToday, as fourthman said, there's no bleed in the comic that is quite noticable in the actual newspaper. Whites are whiter and in particular, the final panel in newspaper has a blurry yellow/green undefined background that is quite clearly a multi-colored cloud scene in Wednesday Comics.

So whether it be paper or printing technique - the DC version looks FAR better than the USA Today version.
