Twigglet wrote:Or course selling more is important to defining a decade. It's one of the key factors to consider.

And yes I do have actual numbers to back up my claims, that's better than a number of American posters.

And yes, you say they DIDN'T DEFINE AMERICA, but they certainly were one of the biggest artists of the 90's over there, but since they defined the UK, most of Europe and can easily be in with a shout to have said to have define a decade in teh US, they're definitely up there.

Internet shorted out for a bit there.

Do you realize how silly it is to claim that numbers mean more than actually being brought up here? Don't you think that if a number of people living in America claim that Spice Girls weren't definitive here, people that were raised in a number of backgrounds, that maybe you're merely looking at this as a numbers game over viewing the sociological perspective.

I'll ask you two things to end this post: 1. tell me, with your minds eye, how you view a 90's American teenager? which goes to point 2:

Quit choosing what you're going to answer to. I asked you to view this from a sociological perspective and you've ignored that. I asked you what you understand from the American mindset of the 90's and you ignored that. I asked you why you think that ONE band has to define the 90's; why ONE band has to define the 190+ countries out there. Outside of the numbers how does Spice Girls end up being our band? Do you KNOW how huge Garth Brooks was during the 90's? I mean for goodness sake man, if you WANT to make this about numbers, you can claim the backstreet boys (number 42 on the ALL TIME US bestselling artist list) defined us more than them.

And addressing the end of your post where you take into account most of Europe. Congrats, most of Europe thinks the Spice Girls define the 90's, amazingly enough we have another perspective. Which is why you need to stop considering that everyone's musical decade was the same and understand that different bands have VERY different impacts in the countries they appear.

edit: THIS POST IS TOOOOOO LONG. NEVER AGAIN!

That's way to long. I think you've missed my point completely. I don't really think one band has to define the 90's but the argument didn't come about because I claimed only one band could dominate the 90's it come about because when I said the Spice girls represented the 90's Chris said I don't know what I was talking about. I think it's pretty obvious with what I opsted that the Spice Girls were indeed one of the bands in contention for the role of a band which defines the decade so I cba argue any more.

You're now saying that they were "one" of the bands that defined the 90's and that they were "one" of the bands in contention for said role but previously you categorically stated that:

Exactly like Benderbrau posted, you claimed that they were definitive even in America. Your new post completely changes your argument to something which fits what I've been telling you from the start you should think like. Not to mention the arguments you've made to say that the Spice Girls defined America's 90s, not that the SG's are ONE of the bands that defined Americas 90's.

I think another good question is: what better defined 90s, grunge or pop? I don't take anything away from the Spice Girls, but I think that selling that many albums of grunge rock is more indicative of historical context than selling that many of pop.

The rise of Britpop in the UK in the 90s was in large part an answer against the popularity of Nirvana.

Don't worry. Nothing we say could be nearly as painful as you having to live with that knowledge. ;)

Christ almighty, I entered this thread thinking it was gonna be a epic 10 page argument on Kanye West and I was gonna have to quote everyone who said a bad thing against my main man Kanye, but it turned into some shit on the Spice Girls and Nirvana.
