Blackberry Ice Cream

Postby outsider » Sun Jul 26, 2009 2:08 pm

I just made some blackberry ice cream. I used fresh blackberries, bought at the local farmer's market yesterday. It is purple deliciousness.

It's the first batch out of my 'new' (had it since May) 1-quart gel canister ice cream maker. I highly recommend purchasing one of those. It is so great to have homemade ice cream and not have my hands frozen and crusted with rock salt.

Somehow, I thought this was going to involve some sort of photoshop with a blackberry mobile phone and some ice cream.

Your way makes much more sense, tbh.

Besides the silky, creamy texture, there is an occasional frozen bit of blackberry, like a miniature iced flavor treat.

What flavor should I try next? Pumpkin spice coffee is on my eventual list. I'm considering having a half dozen or so 'small batch' ice cream flavors at my son's birthday party in September.

The trail I hike out here has about 30 yards of ripe blackberry bushes that I've been raping with a freezer bag every morning. I ran into a family that was swimkingin the creek this morning and I trained their kids to go deep in the bush to grab them for me. Pure awesome!

Hab

ps Nate I'm seriously thinking of paying you a visit for some of that ice cream.

My grandfather used to make delicious homemade peach ice cream, and he used one of those hand-crank units. The ice cream would have just a hint of that peach color, with bits of the fruit, natch.

Store-bought ice creams like Breyers makes decent versions, but most look (and taste) like vanilla ice cream with bits of peach, not like it's peach ice cream with bits of peach, y'know?
