Do a Brain and Mallah still exist in current DC continuity? Because I wonder if this new book has set the stage for their re-imagining.

They do indeed, Geoff Johns of all people used them in Teen Titans, and actually brought back their gay love for eachother.

Oh, I was hoping that DP was left on the cutting room floor, as it were.

There isn't really any indication here, but it seems as though this Patrol have been together for a while at least, though.

When Grant Morrison breaks something, he breaks the hell out of it.

I just read through the book once, and unfortunately I don't feel it has what a great DP run needs--it hasn't the zeitgeist. It will definitely reinforce Lee's feelings towards Keith Giffen, though.

The character re-designs are pretty disappointing too. The Chief looked too much like an older, dyspeptic Raymond Burr.

I actually thought it was a pretty good series, Matt Sturges is a good writer.

I think either Mallah or Grodd fell off a cliff to their death, but then wasn't dead.

Grodd killed Mallah, and Joker kicked Grodd off a cliff but he didn't die as he showed up in Flash later.

This definitely seems to be a continuation of the Johns Teen Titans DP that restored most of their previous continuity--we've got a seasoned core group with Bumblebee sidelined and Nudge & Grunt are considered newer members.

At the same time though, The Flash was fighting the villain Spin, who uses fear against people, and his power saved Grodd and brought him back to Earth to fight The Flash.

Ok so I didn't enjoy this book at all. I've never read any of the old Doom Patrol that so many people speak so highly of so the nostalgia effect was nil for me and I feel that hurt this book even more. The writing was fine and the art was nice enough, but nothing happened that was suspenseful, interesting or cool. It was just a bunch of people talking about different shit. They invaded this base for some reason and then they run away shortly thereafter. Noone seemed to even care that one of their group was killed. There was nothing in this book that makes me feel like I need to get issue 2 to see how things turn out. I frankly just didn't care. I like Giffen, Annihilation is maybe my favorite 'event' of all time, so for that event alone he's ok in my book, but this book was just to my liking.

I'll post a full review later, but I will say that while there were some aspects of the issue I really liked, it didn't knock me out. I did really enjoy the Metal Men backup though.
