I may not like all of Marvel's crossovers but House of M, Annihilation, Civil War, Secret Invasion, they all were planned out and gave the 616 a new status quo. I even enjoyed some of the shake ups.
The real problem is that DC isn't committed to their events. Both Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis made major changes to the DC status quo, but no one seemed truly willing to commit to them, and we were right back to the way things were within a few months (or the books just fell apart).
I would rather see events build naturally from what occurs in some of the bigger books. The Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night are good examples; the recent Crisis books were not. If the next big event builds out of New Krypton, then I think that could end up being quite good.
