I really liked this issue. Hickman's got a really good grip on the kids and I really like his take on Reed. The Council idea is a little like the Kang one but that doesn't make it any less awesome.

A lot of people are harping on Eaglesham about Reed and Johnny's bulkiness but that doesn't really bother me. I've read enough superhero comics to know artists exaggerate sometimes. I was a little thrown by Ben's speech pattern. I think Hickman needs to work on that to make Ben sound a little more normal and a little less Jimmy Durante(which granted his speech pattern is based on but he's progressed since the 60's).

All in all an excellent start to what I hope is a great run.

I dug it. Not familiar with the backstory surrounding "the machine," but this looks like an interesting turn of events. I also like Eaglesham's lantern-jawed Reed (I got the variant cover).

Fantastic Four #570: Hickman/Eaglesham Marvel $2.99
The first issue of Jonathan Hickman’s Fantastic Four run is well….fantastic. I really dug the issue, the art is killer here. Especially the flashback sequence. Hickman really makes FF interesting again, similar to Millar/Hitch run. I just hope Hickman and Eaglesham don’t run out of steam. I also had no problem with the bulky Reed and Johnny. I don’t really have much to say other than it was a solid opening to Hickman’s run.

Fantastic Four #570
Being a fan of Jonathon Hickman, I really wanted to like this but I have come to the conclusion that I just don't like the Fantastic Four. I have picked up and dropped this title more time than any other book and it always falls flat with me. This first issue of Hickman's run had a few nice moments but is was just sorta dumb and boring. My real question is why was Hughie (from The Boys) one of the clones? it looked just like him! Anyways, I am not interested with Johnny and Ben going to Nu-Earth. Reed meeting different versions of himself whom will probably turn out to be evil is just dumb. The most interesting member of the 4 (Sue) is totally under used... and the art was just all over the place, what was with Eaglesham drawing small heads? Or ginormous bodies? I think this title will never be what it once was because is is just stale and until someone comes in and shakes things up it is going to stay boring, hell let the kids grow up some and utilize their powers, I dunno... maybe the comics world has moved on from the first family, I think I have.

Hey all, sorry--I've been on the run from the military for a crime I didn't commit.

Basically.

I didn't get a chance to pick up comics last week, but I got this FF today and I have a lot to say, probably, unless I forget what and just post a number or haiku.

First, outside my impending review I'd like to address why Reed Richards is a bad husband and father--which is what got me banned from the Marvel boards a couple of years ago. It's turns out one of the moderators is not only a Reed Richards cosplayer, they are also a firm believer in the sanctity of comic book marriage.

(This was during Civil War, and I thought Sue should DEFINITELY file for divorce, and if she wasn't going to spend some time on her knees before the Lord of Atlantis, maybe she could have a drunken night with, oh, say Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and maybe Peter Parker.)

Which got me banned.

OK. Reed did some pretty fucked up shit back then, but unlike many of you I actually read Dark Reign: FF. It wasn't very good. FF 570 is a bit better, hell a lot better art-wise, but many of the same flaws persist. I'll save them for my actual review.

But (don't read if you don't wanna know):
[spoiler]At the end of it, Norman Osborn does something COMPLETELY out of the blue and lunges at Reed to shoot him in the head. Which, you would think either Sue would do a forcefield, Reed would make himself extra pliable, Johnny would melt the bullet--but no. What happens is Franklin shoots Norman Osborn with a plastic toy gun. After which they sort of scold him, saying "Hey young man, you can't hurt people no matter how right you think you are!" but don't seem overly concerned with a) how the gun fired a bullet, or b) the fact that their son just shot somebody. Plus, that chiding rings hollow when your family makes a career out of hurting people they think are wrong. If Val is a genius, she should've totally called bullshit there![/spoiler]

But Reed isn't concerned about that at all in FF570, leading me to believe a visit from Child Protective Services is in order.

And as to his constant poor treatment of Sue, one of the sexiest women in the 616, when Franklin says "I really hate going to bed!" in this issue, Reed replies "I know how you feel."

This brings me back to my original point that Sue Storm deserves a husband who still brings the magic in the bedroom once in a while, or maybe a lesbian fling--one or the other or both.

One I am interested in but many of you may not be is Starr the Slayer by Daniel Way and the great Richard Corben.

Man, there's also Irredeemable, Do Androids..., The Boys, I don't usually like this many comics in one week thank God.

That means it's going to have to be one I'd buy anyway, either Starr, Sweet Tooth, or Strange Tales.

This issue clearly shows the damage is still beneath the surface, and Sue is staying with him until the kids grow up. You know, never.
