While the rumour that you can hear the ocean if you get close enough to Alan Moore's beard is false, the rumor about the family of knomes isn't.

Alan Moore's beard protects him from all earthly diseases and extraterrestial diseases as well. Just being in near it will protect you from magic attacks.
