If you would like to join the group it's easy. Just post a review and I'll add you to the member's list. As long as you stay active, eventually it will be your turn to make a pick.

With $4 comics becoming the norm, the economy being what it is and the growing popularity of mail order services the Review Group recognizes that it's becoming harder and harder to commit to participating each and every week. As long as you can post one review per calendar month you will stay in the member's list. It doesn't matter if you post your review the week of it's release or if you post it later. Going forward, there is no such thing as a "late" review.

The only request I make with the new format is that if you don't plan on posting a review or if you're going to be posting late is that you drop a note in the thread so that I can keep track of who is active and who isn't. The Spreadsheet of Doom is thorough, but it can't read your mind.

Image
Comics are to be scored on a scale from 1-10. 1 being suck, 10 being a damn good comic. Beyond that, there's no right or wrong.

Image
If it's your week, you must announce your selection by 5pm EST the day Diamond releases it's shipping list. If you do not announce your pick at that time, I will add a poll to the thread that will remain open until 12pm EST so that the group can make the selection for that week. (If you're seriously MIA, I'll probably put the poll up sooner) To ensure that you know it's your week, I will PM you when Midtown's list goes live on Thursdays.

Haunt #1

I was pleasantly surprised by this comic. The story is intriguing ("In this issue, the main character dies!"), and the apparent rivalry between the two brothers sets up an interesting conflict. The scene transitions were a bit clunky in places, and the torture scene is over the top, but overall this was a solid first issue.

As for Haunt himself, I actually like the design, although I prefer Ryan Ottley's version over Todd McFarlane's. While I initially assumed this was a Spider-Man clone, the power set is actually pretty interesting, and I like the very organic, primal looking costume for the character. While the idea of a man combining with his ghost brother to form a superpowered entity is, believe it or not, an old concept (see Captain Triumph), it is not exactly well trodden ground, and I can see Robert Kirkman getting a great deal of mileage out of the character.

The art from Ottley is, as always, fantastic. The faces are all very expressive, and the action sequences are dynamic without reaching Liefeld levels of ridiculousness. I am also quite the fan of Greg Capulo's panel layouts. He is not as original as Frank Quitely or J.H. Williams III, but he manages to walk a fine line between traditional layouts and more progressive work, and he does a great job using his layouts to draw attention to important scenes. The only downside is the inking, which is a bit messy and seems to take away from the fluidity of Ottley's pencils. It does add a "gritty" touch to the book, but I would prefer to have Cliff Rathburn here rather than McFarlane (odd that the two problems I have with the art are connected to the biggest name on the book).

I am still undecided as to whether I will continue with this series. It has some interesting ideas, and Ottley is always a lot of fun, but I do not know if it is enough to keep me entertained. Nonetheless, I think it was a solid first issue, and I would recommend checking it out.

Story: 7
Art: 8
Overall: 7.5

Depends how good he thinks it's going to be, what if he thinks it will be a 9, but secretly hopes it's a 10?
