I still haven't finished Countdown.

I liked it when it originally came out but got behind on the issues and I've tried to pick it back up but just can't.

I really hate that Jimmy Olsen storyline.

"Jimmy Olsen Must Die!" had a nice flair to it, but you're right in that they didn't execute it as well as they could have. A weekly book was probably not the right format for that story.

To me, the opening chapter of a book, movie, comic etc, needs to have something to pull you in. I understand he may be building to something but to hook a casual reader there needed to be a moment to reel them in. There was nothing like that to me here. The issue hopped around from obscure character to obscure character. I'll stick with it because I expect great things from Morrison but as a first issue it failed.

If you bought and enjoyed Countdown and DotNG, how does it not being *completely* canon take away from that enjoyment? If you bought and didn't enjoy those titles, well tough. Don't buy books you don't like just because they fit into some greater scheme of things. The first clue as you being fucked over was when they took the words Final Crisis out of the title of Countdown.

That being said, I say DC was being pretty damn sneaky and greedy with the entire ordeal. There was no need to count down to anything for an entire fucking year, and if you are going to do so make sure the event you're counting down to is actually the same story your Countdown titles show. FC came first. Those auxiliary titles were supposed to supplement it, not the other way around.

They didn't take the words Final Crisis out, they added them in HALF WAY THROUGH.

As in they told readers that they were counting down to Final Crisis, when they knew all along, it would'nt even tie in.

That's rediculously bad way to treat your customers.

Pretty much. And the interview with Morrison over at Newsarama seems to indicate that it was editorial's fuck up.

Like how bad was it? Minor goofs or plot destroying fuck ups?

Countdown was a bad idea to begin with. The creators seem to have lost control halfway through it and it's hard to even guess who was really writing it at that point. I'm not the biggest Dini comics fan, but I still can't imagine he's responsible for all of that.

Put it this way: if I'd shelled out for 52 issues of Countdown plus 8 issues of Death of the New Gods I'd be pretty pissed off at this point, as neither of them seem to make a lick of sense any more. Considering these books were meant to lead directly into Final Crisis, it is a bit of a clusterfuck.

I did all that, and I'm not all that mad.

The only really bad part is that one of the big moments in FC#1 loses a lot because you've seen something like it before.

I'm just choosing to ignore Countdown and DOTNG: it doesn't annoy me at all, but I can understand how others may be.

Well if I was into the events and I was told that this series would setup the major event series coming up only to find out after I bought them that it was not true I'd be a bit pissed myself. Its not about being a fanboy its about being lied to.

Precisely. Especially since Countdown was 52 issues long (at $2.99 a pop].

I'm not sure it won't though, in a way.

Grant started his story well before Countdown but that doesn't mean that it won't factor into the tie-ins, and both did feature the death of the New Gods, which plays into FC.

So, yeah, definitely a matter of DC trying to exploit and hype this thing, but I really don't know how its going to turn out yet,

Fair enough.

But anybody who bought a book they didn't like just because it was said to set up the next event have only themselves to blame.
