Generic. Nineties. Story.

This is a whole lot of clichés mixed together in a blender and thrown down for your... um... enjoyment. If this had come out maybe fifteen years ago? I might be interested. Probably not, mind you, because I was never that into Spawn and this reads a lot like the very little of Spawn I've actually read.

Maybe that's more due to the art than the story. It's hard to say. It still has that definite "Spawn" feel to the storytelling but I'd say it's also attached itself all over the art. I'll give credit where it's deserved. The art isn't bad. I actually like it. Kudos.

And what can be said about a horribly derivative costume that hasn't been said already? Nothing? Should I mention that it looks like black suit Spidey's been reading too much porn and has terrible aim again? No? OK, then I'll just be silent on the issue.

Anyway, generic story elements over nice art isn't gonna get me to come back for issue two.

Haunt, you get a 3. I'll try to act surprised when the next writer comes up with the "preacher who sleeps with hookers" character.

Haunt #1

So, Daniel is a not so priestly priest. That certainly doesn't stop him from holding his collar over his special forces brother's head.

When bad guys come after Kurt for something he doesn't have, they kill him. Now Daniel sees dead people... or well... dead person.

Oh yeah, and when danger strikes, they turn into a spooge wielding Spider-Man clone.

As derivative a comic a comic as I have ever read. So much so that it feels like Spawn (so McFarlane is stealing from himself :? ). Yet magically, like Mephisto stealing Peter Parker's marriage, it somehow works (wait Haunt does not One More Day). WE get a compelling mystery, some solid character interaction and a nice by the numbers introduction into this world.

The art is much the same. With Capullo, Ottley and McFarlane all responsible for the final product, it is kind of a bit of a mess. Sometimes Capullo is dominate, sometimes Ottley is full on, and sometimes classic McFarlane rears its head. Somehow it all looks a little like new Romita Jr, especially with Plascenia's coloring. NOthing spectacular, but there is safety in familiarity or familiarity in safety... something like that.

A familiar yet satisifying read, Haunt I score thee a 7.

it was a fine start. Better than most #1 issues that launch a new character. But I'll have to wait and see if there's a really hook to the story before I invest money into this title.
