Review Group 194 - DARK AVENGERS: ARES #1

Week 208 Poll! As was discussed a bit in last week's clusterfuck of a thread, Week 208 is on the horizon. Assuming these Dark Reign slapfights don't tear the group asunder, soon the Review Group will reach it's 4th anniversary. We've got a couple of pretty good ideas on how to celebrate this momentous occasion, but it's time to narrow it down to one. Here are the options, anyone can vote and everyone is invited to participate in whatever we end up doing.

Free-for-All - This leaves the reviews up to the reviewer. Maybe you review all of your comics for the week, maybe you just pull a few random books off the shelf and review those. It's totally up to the reviewer.

Review 'Em All - This option challenges the Review Group to review every Marvel and DC book released on Week 208. As soon as the shipping list for February 3rd goes up, I'll post a thread where we all can come in and claim the books we want to review for the week on a first come, first serve basis. It's all strictly voluntary of course so no one has to review more books than they would be comfortable with.

The #1's - Go back into your collection and review your favorite first issues of all time.

So those are your choices. No whining please.

Week 203 - Most of you have probably heard about it already, but if you haven't, Diamond has announced that they will not be shipping books on the last week of the year. As an official fuck you to Diamond, we'll be using a superior distributor to get our comics that week, the internets! For the week of December 30th we'll be reviewing webcomics - reviewer's choice, naturally. If you've already got a favorite, awesome. If not, you might start looking around. I'm sure there will be lots of in-thread suggestions when the time comes.

Dark Avengers: Ares #1
as selected by SuperginraiX
WRITER: Kieron Gillen
PENCILS: Manuel Garcia

Ares – the God of War! His relentless brutality and his bloodthirsty drive to attain victory at any cost earned him only scorn from his fellow gods in the Greek pantheon, and exile from Olympus. After thousands of years living as a man and fighting in man’s bloody, petty conflicts, Ares joined the ranks of Earth’s mightiest heroes – the Avengers. Now Norman Osborn – the new head of the corrupted Dark Avengers and director of the paramilitary intelligence agency H.A.M.M.E.R. – wants the finest fighting force the God of War can provide. He charges Ares with hand-picking an elite squad of soldiers and beating them into the hardest, sharpest warriors ever to wield an M-60 in each hand. And that’s exactly what Ares will need, when the goddess Hera provides him with a fighting chance to regain his standing in the pantheon’s eyes. And Ares is taking his men with him into the battle of their lives… Rated T …$3.99

Deadpool Team-Up #899
as selected by doombug
WRITER: Fred Van Lente
PENCILS: Dalibor Talajic

Stop rubbing your eyes, fanboy, they don't deceive you! Everyone's favorite Merc with a Mouth stars in a third on-going series, hacking and wisecracking his way across the Marvel Universe with a new guest-star every month! First up: when master assassin ARCADE and NIGHTMARE, Lord of the Dream Dimension, join forces to destroy Wade Wilson and THE INCREDIBLE HERCULES, they get more than they bargain for, taking on two of the MU's most irresponsible heroes! Drunken mayhem, bad jokes, and billions of dollars of property damage ensue! Parental Advisory …$2.99

If you would like to join the group it's easy. Just post a review and I'll add you to the member's list. As long as you stay active, eventually it will be your turn to make a pick.

With $4 comics becoming the norm, the economy being what it is and the growing popularity of mail order services the Review Group recognizes that it's becoming harder and harder to commit to participating each and every week. As long as you can post one review per calendar month you will stay in the member's list. It doesn't matter if you post your review the week of it's release or if you post it later. Going forward, there is no such thing as a "late" review.

The only request I make with the new format is that if you don't plan on posting a review or if you're going to be posting late is that you drop a note in the thread so that I can keep track of who is active and who isn't. The Spreadsheet of Doom is thorough, but it can't read your mind.

Image
Comics are to be scored on a scale from 1-10. 1 being suck, 10 being a damn good comic. Beyond that, there's no right or wrong.

Image
If it's your week, you must announce your selection by 5pm EST the day Diamond releases it's shipping list. If you do not announce your pick at that time, I will add a poll to the thread that will remain open until 12pm EST so that the group can make the selection for that week. (If you're seriously MIA, I'll probably put the poll up sooner) To ensure that you know it's your week, I will PM you when Midtown's list goes live on Thursdays.

Nope.

starlord wrote:and what's a web comic? And how do I find them? :?

Comics that are published online. There are tons of them on Zuda and there's also stuff like Freakangels or Penny Arcade or Angry Little Robot or Colt Nobel and the Megalords or Sin Tutulo... basically, they're online and they're free. Should make for an easy/fun week. 8)

Is there any way to see what Marvel/DC books ship that week yet?

It's going to be a little while until I'm used to online delivery service, but I can't see myself wanting to go to the LCS and buying a lot of extra Marvel or DC books too.

No, they haven't solicited for February yet. You could avoid a superhero book if you got your pick in early and took a Vertigo book or two.

what about an option for each person reviewing a different book for that week? People choose books on a first come first serve basis but no two people review the same thing.

True. I like some superhero books, tho. Just not as many right now, and few of them are safe from being cut. (I'm looking at you, Hickman's FF--the first arc has ended exactly like I thought it would which isn't a good thing.)

I'm calling Amazing Spider-Man if it ships that week. Or anything on my read list.

(If we do review them all)

That's pretty much the Review 'Em All option, it just has the additional layer of allowing those who want to review multiple books in an effort to review everything from Marvel/DC that week.
