A plane flying from Germany is forced to make an emergency landing after it's passengers begin to experience painful and horrific physical ailments. The FBI is called in to investigate. During the course of the investigation one of the agents is wounded in the line of duty forcing another agent to resort to unusual methods to try and save their life as well as solve the case. As events unfold the agent gains some new associates (Joshua Jackson and his mad scientist father) who help her to solve the mystery as well as open her eyes to the greater, and more bizarre, world around her.

That's the Cliff's Notes version of what happens but it's really just the tip of the iceberg. The general landscape of the show is that almost invisible line between where the furthest edge of our current technology ends and theoretical science begins. Or as it's referred to in the show, the fringe or pseudo-sciences. It seems there are more and more of these events happening around the world, collectively referred to as The Pattern. A mixed bag of fantastic and unusual occurences. And in just one episode they REALLY mix it up in the area of sci-fi by giving the viewer a taste test of some of these ideas. But at the same time the show is grounded in our reality so it gives it all a very interesting flavor. There isn't another show like this on TV that I can think of and in spite of what one may think after seeing the commercials, it's nothing like the X-Files.

Although entertaining it's not a perfect show. It does drag at a few points, particularly towards the middle. That is more than made up for though by the rest of the story. When it takes off it really moves out there. The episode is 82 minutes long (would be two hours with commercials). I don't think it was the producers decision though as Fox will be airing two-hour episodes for most of next season premieres/pilot episodes.

More than anything, by the time I got to the end of the pilot I could see the potential of what the show could be if given a chance explore a bit. Storywise they have given themselves a big world to play in. The characters have plenty of personality and I'd like to see more of them all, particularly the nutty professor dad. His character can be crazy, funny, sad and sympathetic all at the same time.

Favorite line of the episode: "Excellent! Let's make some LSD."

I give it an 8/10. I'll definitely be checking it out regularly in the fall.

It had me at mad scientist.

While Cloverfield didn't "fail" me, it did kinda "meh" me.

I think I subconsciously choose to ignore some of the obvious plot holes and stupid character motivations.

Well, like I said, it's a "quirk." :)

Thanks for the review. Good job. I am really looking forward to this.

Ok, WTF?!

There's a Michael Giacchino LOST-theme playing in this episode, when they get to Bishop's lab at Harvard! Check it out, koc! Around the 38 minute mark!

Maybe it's an early version made for the studio to preview and they haven't inserted/recorded the actual score yet?

I just finished this episode -- good stuff. I think KOC is right on the money with his review. The last 30 minutes were very entertaining -- the twist at the end was enough to get me on for a full season, but the established cast had already hooked me since the previews.

There's some pretty good chemistry between Joshua Jackson's character and his father. Kirk Acevedo's character seemed very reserved; I like it when he plays a badass, and from this episode it was difficult to tell what his role will be in the future. I thought Lance Reddick really shined, but he's been pretty good in everything I've seen him in -- I'm curious as to how this show will effect his character on Lost.

Oh I heard it. That's what I was saying earlier. There's a part about halfway in where they are playing music from the movie Signs.

I liked it alot.. it does have a very X-Files-esque feel to it.. but I'm leery because it's FOX.
