X-men Noir: Mark of Cain #3

I managed to get the rest of these issues when I bought this, and I have to say, these books are pretty interesting.

In X-men Noir 3, we join the Golden Age Angel who is locked up in a cell whilst Charles Xavier tortures him looking for the cytorrak gem. Cain Marko has previously been found dead on the Genosha island prison facility and it seems that the gem is very important.

This has all the typical "noir" ideas, a double cross, a damsel in distress, some characters adept at fighting and a healthy dose of violence.

The reason a book like this works is because it's fun to see reimaginings or characters like this. And because anything can happen. Already in this series now Colossus and Juggernaut have died, and you don't know where the next twist is coming.

However this is also it's biggest flaw, whilst noir is relatively new in comics (well mainstream comics anyway) stuff like the MadroX mini or Criminal are so much better written than this, it seems slightly stale and by the numbers.

The art is very good however, I really liked the art and some of the redesigns. Nightcrawler especially is pretty weird.

So we were making fun of this based on the wiki description a bit in this thread so I was kind of looking forward to reading this, but once I got it and flipped through it and saw none of the goofy craziness that I was expecting I tossed it to the side and it just kind of sat on my desk for a month.

Obviously there must be people who read and enjoy this and Antarctic Press certainly seems to pump a ton of Gold Diggers and it's related titles out, but from what I read in these two issues it's not really for me.

The story in Gold Diggers is about two women air-dueling for the right to marry some dude they're fighting over. It leads to a fight which is pretty confusing but it ends about how you'd expect. My biggest problem here was that without any prior knowledge, there wasn't enough here to really introduce me to the characters to care one way or the other. Everyone in the book has stereotypical manga/anime characterizations that just wasn't appealing to me. One of the characters also spoke with some weird dialect and it was super annoying.

The art feels a bit rushed and there's this weird thing when a character's hair covers their eyes that comes across as a bit unrefined. This probably would look a bit better without the digital coloring.

The Tech Manual is written in the form of one of the character's Tech Journals. It reads fairly conversational and the couple of entries that I read were somewhat fun and if I had read the previous 113 issues of the main series and was really fanatical about the title, I could see how someone could get some entertainment out of this. Not being familiar with the title, it's pretty gorram boring. The art included is mostly uncolored sketches and blueprints. The layout of the book is completely devoid of any creativity and there were a few typos that were glaringly obvious.
