despite researching the story so much when i was a kid i could never figure this out:why did the romans steal and rename the ancient greek gods?

they spok latin, and no shit :roll:

i meant why not impose their own deity's on other cultures instead of swiping the greek mythology? they didnt do that to the ancient egyptians for example.

It's very common for conquering societies to assimilate some of the beliefs of the cultures they conquor, whether from breeding with the occupied peoples or to placate them.

Two reasons, I'd think. First off, imposing your own deity is the fastest way to piss off the conquered. Hell, just look at the sheer AMOUNT of Christianity which is blatantly ripped from pagan religions: The best way to make the new people YOUR people is to absorb their mythology into your mythology.

As for specifically why the Greeks... to the "civilized" world at the time, ancient Greece was considered the high of civilization and learned thought. The Romans copied what worked: Notice the republic style of government.

And hell, the Roman Aenied was written to connect the founding of their city with ancient Greece.

Ancient Egypt WERE on the same level, and there is actually evidence of a bit of swiping between Egypt and Greece, if I'm not mistaken.

But there's the civilized world... and the "civilized" world I mentioned. The Romans didn't know much about the eastern civilizations like Egypt, I don't think, until after they were already worshipping the Greek Pantheon, which of course, had been widely spread throughout the mediterranean for who knows how long.
