I guess im not too dissapointed by FFXIII , mostly because i expected it to be linear. Actually i was hoping it would be this way. I recently bought Fallout 3, and i can't really get into the free roaming, open world stuff. Great game, but it can't hold my attention like a tight narrative. Which i get in droves in FFXII. I'm really enjoying the story, and the characters are fantastic. I miss towns, and i wish the story had a bit more focus at this point( I'm in the forest with Vanille and Sahz), but i get annoyed with these bloggers that think they have a legitimate gripe about the actual quality of the game. This ire is more directed at the hack job Destructoid did. They gave it a 4 so that people reading metacritic would scroll to the lowest score and see their outrageous score, and check it out. I think thats bullshit, and this toplessrobot article reminded me of it.

That said, the toplessrobot guy has vastly different tastes than i , so i don't mind.

That's a legitimate gripe. I've found that I really like the free roaming aspect of Western RPGs, and that I have a hard time playing more linear games now. I've enjoyed FFXIII for what it is, but it's by no means one of my favorite games, or even one of my favorite RPGs.

After playing a bit of Bayonetta, I can't understand why anyone thought that was anything more than a mediocre game. Decent combat, sucky everything else.

Baskerville Holmes wrote:You mean Cyan (the samurai)? He was great. He had a really brutal, heartbreaking story in the game and his SwordTech skills were badass. I think you just might not the way these characters talk (Cyan had a lot of thees and thous and Gau spoke broken English...same with Ayla in Chrono Trigger).

And plus, Kefka >>>>>> Sephiroth as a villain. What I like about Kefka is that he's just truly evil. No redeeming qualities make him a true villian. He's also fucking crazy. And what happens when a sick, crazy lunatic basically becomes God? He lays waste to EVERYTHING. I need to find a sound clip of his laugh and use it as a ring tone or text alert.

Cyan could be powerful but I think it was too dependent on his swords or something, I can not recall at the time. I liked the chick you started the game with, the thief, the inventor and probably another hammer who would just chip away at their health. The language did not bother me so much with Gau I just thought it was a stupid premise for a character, Tarzan is lame and so is every knock off character like tarzan. I actually liked Ayla in Chrono Trigger. Now that I think about it I think I used the chick swordsman too.

I can appreciate both, but sometimes having too much exploration just annoys me, I either get caught up doing sidequests forever and lose track of the story or I end up missing something that gives me a sweet weapon or something like that. I like the faux exploration where every dungeon is huge and you can explore it, but it is still leading to a specific point which you have to pass to continue on in the game.

Perhaps gamers are finally opening their eyes to the fact that ...
1)Since FFVII, there have been little to no improvement on the FF games.
2)Since VII most of those games are more or less interactive movies.

And screw a FFVII remake, if there is a RPG I want to see remade is Panzer Dragoon Saga.

I think IX is the most underrated of all the FF games. Sure it had the lamest end boss to date but the setting and character designs were great.

But you are right about one thing, RPG's (a several other genres of games) have decided to spend time with this cutscenes rather than extensive gameplay. I hate to say it, because we waited so long, but I would prefer if they took games back to when it was just text bubbles rather than live voice actors. At least then you could quickly read through scenes and avoid having to deal with a five minute cutscene every two minutes.

Probably because IX felt more like a throw back to games previous to VII and it was a little more light in tone, sadly this style seems now confined to the FF Crystal Chronicles games.

The first crystal chronicles was so lame, there was virtually no story I could not even finish it. I do not know if the one that came out for Wii was any better.

Anyways these lighter tones are great and i love the goofy character designs. IX also has my favorite character in all the series, Vivi the black mage.
