Yep
plus you just know with Whedon he will have some stereotypical strong female character who will only die in the end.

You've got a guy that cares about the source material, and has shown a talent to direct.
Is there someone out there better? Probably. But fanboy ire is high-larious to see.
To me his directorial skills are questionable when it comes to film. Serenity was not a compelling film to people who never watched the show. If you did watch the show it was pretty incredible, if you did not watch the show it was very much meh.

And honestly there was nothing visually astounding about how Serenity was shot and isn't that half the director's job?

yep,
I have no doubt that if someone like Abrams who knows how to film good action scenes or someone else directed the film it would have been recieved better.

There's only so much you can do to get audiences interested in space movies IMO.

I don't see how Abrams skills as demonstrated in MI:3 or Star Trek show any greater skill than Serenity.
You guys must love lens flare.

But he is a cheep director coming into a property that he will be respectful to. Where as Jon Favreau would be asking for a ton of money based on the success of the Iron Man films.

I disagree. I saw it before the series, and it got me interested in the show.
