Mussina 11-6 Record, 3.64 ERA, 1.214 WHIP, 63 Ks

In comparison:

Joe Saunders: 12-4 Record, 3.04 ERA, 1.157 WHIP, 58 Ks
Cliff Lee: 11-1 Record, 2.26 ERA, 1.030 WHIP, 93 Ks
Roy Halladay: 10-6 Record, 2.88 ERA, 1.041 WHIP, 113 Ks
Justin Duchscherer: 9-5 Record, 1.96 ERA, 0.924 WHIP, 59 Ks
Ervin Santana: 9-3 Record, 3.28 ERA, 1.092 WHIP, 106 Ks
Scott Kazmir: 7-3 Record, 2.63 ERA, 1.125 WHIP, 75 Ks

I tend to agree.

I was just listening to the radio and hearing everybody complain about Mussina not being there, but the numbers justify those other guys ahead of him. I don't really have a problem with it.

Considering all six of those players deserved it, yes.

But you can also make the opposing argument, does one game need 7 starting pitchers?

Apparently the players make worse choices than the fans.

Man, I don't know if I've ever seen a player as dialed in as J.J. Hardy has been over the past week or so. He's all ready hit two homers today and he's been hitting the absolute cover off of the ball over the last 10 days or so.

It could have used them that year with the tie.

How does the players choice work? Are they given a list? Is it all players?

No they couldn't because the ASG will always remain an exhibition game and they won't go past 11 or 12 innings IMO. With a 12 man pitching staff in an AL park, you're fine. The manager just needs to not be a moron and use them all early.

Is Mike Mussina having a better season than George Sherrill, Joe Nathan, Mariano Rivera, Jon Papelbon, Francisco Rodriguez or Joakim Soria? I dont think so at all. Its not even close

Yes. They each get a ballot and BTW...the players are the ones who choose the pitchers

Francona only fills out the roster to 31 players he only chose Duchscherer, Nathan and Sherrill among the pitchers

Here's my issue. We all know that this All-Star Game has a different meaning. I think something could have been done by the managers to give the New York teams better representation.

And of those guys listed, Papelbon doesn't need to be there. Neither do Sherrill and Soria, but they are their teams only reps.

Who chose the other reserves?

The players select the pitching staff and one back up at each position

The players selected these reserves: Bradley, catcher Varitek and outfielder Drew, first baseman Justin Morneau of the Twins, second baseman Ian Kinsler and shortstop Michael Young of the Rangers, third baseman Joe Crede and outfielder Carlos Quentin of the White Sox and outfielder Grady Sizemore of the Indians.

Francona added infielder Carlos Guillen of the Tigers, catcher Dioner Navarro of the Rays and pitchers George Sherrill of the Orioles, Justin Duchscherer of the A's and Joe Nathan of the Twins.

The AL pitching staff is as follows: Duchscherer is joined by fellow starters Roy Halladay of the Blue Jays, Cliff Lee of the Indians, Scott Kazmir of the Rays, and Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana of the Angels. Sherrill and Nathan are joined by fellow relievers Rivera, Papelbon, Frankie Rodriguez of the Angels and Joakim Soria of the Royals.

As in the NL, the players made all the other pitching selections.

Then I take back what I said about Francona.

Though I still think it's dumb.

I'm curious what players other than Ortiz and Chipper will sit out.

Probably Soriano. Maybe Zambrano
