That's irrelevant really. His quality as a writer has no bearing on Parental Advisory warnings.

Though I disagree.

I think it is poor form to call someone irresponsible if they do not notice that little sticker. I buy several books each week, I only look at the title and issue number, I do not have time to scan the cover of each book for this stuff. Of course I buy things for myself I am not buying for a child and I would not stop buying it if I saw it anyways. But I do not think Marvel or DC would hurt their sales if made them bigger though, but it should be their decision.

Also Mark Millar is a lazy writer, his Wolverine was fun but not ground breaking, his FF was terrible, Civil War stunk. He is like a crappy version of Grant Morrison.

Very nice article, Zenguru. I can't say I agree with everything you said, but you stated your position well.

I look forward to reading more.

Isn't that sort of like saying Timothy McVeigh's a crappy version of Ted Kaczynski?

But if you're buying a comic for a kid, you'd look closer (I assume). I don't look at them either, but then I'm not bothered.

And Grant Morrison is perfectly capable of being crap by himself!

They are both big ideas guys who fill their stuff with substancless shock moments. Morrison at least has some really well regarded runs on well established characters (although I did not love them), where as Millar has some very very mediocre runs in the MU.

As well as Ultimates, Ultimate X-Men, Authority, Wanted, Chosen, Kick-Ass and others, all of which are critically acclaimed (on the whole) and sold shit-loads.

And once again, this argument has nothing to do with their quality! Do you want a 'Crappy Writer' warning label on your comics?

The perception of comic book content is forty years behind what it actually is. I think it's a failure of comic shop operators who'd rather make a sale than tell their customers what they're really buying.

Hated that book and movie with a passion.

Kick-Ass was a much better movie than a book.

Ultimates was great, but not mainline Marvel which was my point in comparing the two.

Authority I heard was good, but I have also heard that it was pretty crappy under Millar compared to the original writer and team.

I would really love that very much.

Why should people in the know have to compensate for ignorant people? Take the time to become knowledgeable about a subject before you start ranting and suing people.

They already have that label. Just look for the words "written by Geoff Johns"

Zenguru wrote:So why didn't anybody raise a ruckus about it back then? Well, I'm sure someone did....

for one thing, it was a Vertigo title. At the time, and even now, most comic book readers know what the label Vertigo means, it means at least an R rating.

The thing is that Vertigo, MAX, Icon, etc say to a reader that "99% of the time this book is not for kids" whereas Ultimate Comics has PG - PG 13 movie stars in it. On the heals of Iron Man 2, a movie steeped in both 616 and Ultimate continuity, when people may be walking into an LCS to find comics for their kids so they can get the whole story, having shock porn in a, for all intents and purposes, mainstream Captain America book was irresponsible.
