Fifth. After the Yankees (26), Cards (10), As (9) and Red Sox (7).

UCLA alone has won 100 championships. 70 in men's sports and another 30 in women's as of spring of 2007.

That's a few more than NY. :-D

USC has another 84 national championships. 62 for men and 22 for women. These numbers don't include any football titles that might be split, otherwise there would be a few more listed.

UNC has won 32 titles, which puts them 8th all time. However their dominance in basketball and soccer is very impressive. They do come up a bit short though. :-D

What sports are we talking here? And then let me check them against Columbia University which was founded in 1754. The may have won a few titles in the last 3 centuries before either of those two schools were even founded. :P

Found it myself. I think we need to stick to major sports here.

UCLA has won NCAA Division I championships in the following events:
Men's sports (71):
Basketball (11) - 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1995
Golf (2) - 1988, 2008
Gymnastics (2) - 1984, 1987
Soccer (4) - 1985, 1990, 1997, 2002
Swimming & Diving (1) - 1982
Outdoor Track & Field (8) - 1956, 1966, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1978(co), 1987, 1988
Tennis (16) - 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1956, 1960, 1961, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976(co), 1979, 1982, 1984, 2005
Volleyball (19) - 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2006
Water Polo (8) - 1969, 1971, 1972, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2004
Women's sports (32):
Golf (2) - 1991, 2004
Gymnastics (5) - 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004
Indoor Track and Field (2) - 2001, 2002
Outdoor Track and Field (3) - 1982, 1983, 2004
Softball (10) - 1982, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1999, 2003, 2004
Tennis (1) - 2008
Volleyball (3) - 1984, 1990, 1991
Water Polo (6) - 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008

I would take out water polo, volleyball (In the history of the NCAA tournament only one university outside of Cali has won the tournament. You shouldn't get points if you're the only ones competing) and tennis.

My other problem with adding certain college sports is that things get complicated. If you add water polo, then why not fencing? NYU has won 12 co-ed championships and 10 women's championships.

It just gets too messed up.

Out of curiousity though, how many of those wins are as the LA Dodgers?

Huh, only one in Brooklyn eh? That surprises me. But, when they had there great years out there, the Yankees were unstoppable. To be fair though, the Brooklyn era franchise did win four pre-World Series pennants.

The Dodgers (I believe) have the most NL pennants, but the Cardinals have the most NL World Series titles. Because in the forties and fifties, the Dodgers kept running into the damn Yankees.

(That might have changed in the last couple years because of the Cardinals recent success)

All this is is another way to further fan the flames of regional dumbwankery. I can understand doing a "Sports Town of the Decade" deal, but of all-time? Of course big markets will have a decided advantage because of money and the ease they can recruit talent.

And actually the stupidest thing ever on ESPN were those "press conferences" Steve Philips did where he pretended to be the GM of every major league team a couple years ago. God, those were just painful to watch.

Sticking to "official" NCAA sports, the ones used to tally up points for the Sears Cup, would probably be a good dividing line.
