Batman and Robin #13

Written by GRANT MORRISON
Art by FRAZER IRVING

Writer Grant Morrison is joined by artist Frazer Irving (BATMAN: RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE) for the first chapter of a 3-part epic!

Thomas Wayne – a man believed murdered over 20 years ago – has returned with an incredible tale to tell, and he's claiming the entire Wayne fortune! He's slyly demanding that Bruce Wayne must return if Bruce wishes to oppose the claim! Plus, the long-awaited return of the ultimate Batman villain!

Batman | 32pg. | Color | $2.99 US

The fine folks at DC provided The Outhouse with a preview. You can check it out here.

How awesome would it be if Damian actually killed the Joker?

My issue is that Joker is one of the keystones of the Batbooks. DC do a remarkably good job of keeping Batman's big superhero and little crime aspects separate and Joker is one of the few villains he has that play well with both. I vastly prefer the down-to-earth stuff with these characters and resurrecting Joker from the dead doesn't mesh well with that.

Alternatively: Joker' death probably would affect Bruce in a very interesting way, but he's gone right now and the impact on Dick wouldn't be nearly the same. I'd probably really enjoy seeing Bruce's reaction to his son killing his nemesis but I would enjoy it a lot more if Joker was only playing possum in the end.

I could probably run a third reason through but we'll sum that one up as change for change's sake rarely works, and it works even less frequently in the icon-heavy status quo-is-god DCU.

Looks like we've found our mostly off-topic debate for the week already eh?

You don't have to like it, but to say the Joker coming back to life doesn't mesh with current Batman is wrong. Morrison has taken the character out of the street-level and into some crazy shit.

And at the same time Detective has managed to keep the hell out of all of it. Dick in the cowl has only just started showing up there, and Streets of Gotham and Gotham City Sirens have both managed to stay very much street level titles. When Bruce comes back I doubt any of his wacky adventures in time will impact those books at all and I can go on ignoring it. This has always been the case with Batbooks. Even the Bat-Family crossovers used to skew more toward this side of things. Resurrection of Ra's was pretty awful and nothing convinces me that a Joker story on the same lines wouldn't be equally meh.

Anyway, Batman never died.
