RUviews - Season 2 Interlude

Postby LOLtron » Sun Aug 15, 2010 6:05 pm

ImageWith heartfelt sorrow in his heart, RU tries to make up for a bad recommendation with even more recommendations

****
Doomwar #6, Classic G.I. Joe volumes 1, 2 and 3, and Bone Tall Tales.

as usual, text RUViews are below

Doomwar #6 – First and foremost, I have to apologize to any of my 3 viewers that purchased this mini series based on my recommendations.  Yes, issues one and two were nearly perfect, and yes, three through five had some flaws but were very enjoyable, and yes there was no way I should have been able to predict the complete and utter crap number six turned out to be, but even so, I feel really bad.  If you were trade waiting for Doomwar, skip it.  It ends so poorly that I was physically angry when I was done.  If there is anything to be learned from this it is that this mini highlighted the reason most “events” end by setting up the next storyline.  Whereas Siege set up the Heroic Age, I’ll be surprised if the consequences of Doomwar are ever seriously mentioned outside of a Black Panther book (and yes, there were some parts of the story that effects quite a bit of the Marvel Universe).  Again, I am sorry, I can only hope that if you have not yet bought this series, I can now stop you form doing so.

Classic G.I. Joe volumes 1, 2 and 3 – Holy crap is this good.  My buddy, Jude Terror, over at The Outhouse who is famous for always being wrong recommended these books and all I have to say is that even a broken clock is right twice a day (unless its digital).  These books are not only great for the nostalgic value, but also, as a lesson in story telling, Larry Hama was ahead of his time.  If you have not read the original GI Joe yet, do so (although you don’t need to in order to understand the “new” IDW book); they are great fun that surpasses the cartoon in every way.  In fact, just push the cartoon out of your mind totally.  Here, Cobra Commander is a serious threat and people actually die.  I just finished the “silent issue” and even without words, it took me longer to “read” than Giant Sized Old Man Logan.  One finial note, reading these now, 20 years later, some of the politics and gender roles are really kind of funny.  The general having to convince the Joes that a whistle blower testifying how the army broke the law is not a traitor and how right after Cover Girl is introduced, she immediately starts fighting with the only other female Joe, Scarlet, over who is prettier.

Bone Tall Tales – To read from my Ritten RUview:  In a day and age where comic books marketed as, if not specifically tagged as, “appropriate for all ages” include rape, baby murder, and some of the most gruesomely violent scenes just south of a Saw movie, Jeff Smith is a breath of fresh air that reminds us that entertainment does not always have to be gritty, that humor does not have to be vulgar, and just because a villain can stuff a woman into a fridge that does not mean he has to in order to prove he is evil.  There are some great for children stories in this book and when I finished this book, I had a huge smile on my face, not only because I miss new Bone stories, I have already started re-reading the original series, but also because not only did I enjoy the pure innocent fun this book represent, and the only critique I have is that I don’t have any children to read it to.

Don't worry about it. It was an honest mistake. :-)

Now I'm curious to read it, just to see how horrible it truly is.

I watched this while pooping. (Puviews). I felt like RU was here with me in the bathroom, watching me. And he was okay with it, because he just kept talking about comics like nothing was wrong.

Back in my old apartment, I used to have these picture frames that go on a shelf in the bathroom. I don't know why, or remember how I got them, but that's what they were. And I thought, who the fuck puts photos in their bathroom? So I put a bunch of photos of my friend Matt (posts sometimes as Fudgey Lumpkin) in them. People would ask me why there were multiple framed photos of Matt in my bathroom, and I would tell them that they helped me to "go."

For some reason, I was reminded of this.
