Anyway, in the fight between Thanos and Orion, we're going to see a real battle of brains vs. brawn. Orion is a guy who, on top of being a war-hardened soldier and crack fighter in his own right, can summon a hell of a lot of power on his own. I mean, this is a guy who went toe-to-toe with Darkseid, who could either atomize an opponent or send them falling through time by looking at them really hard, and beat him in a straight up fight. I love Thanos to death (look mom, I made a pun), but you have to give Orion his due. To be frank, Thanos was killed by a guy much weaker by comparison than Orion. Plus, as Poolman pointed out, he is going to have his Motherbox with him. That's going to be something which can be brought to bear.
That all being said, Thanos is neither a slouch in his own right nor an idiot. In fact, I dare say in a battle of wit between the two, Thanos wins out of the starting gate. Here's a guy who figured out massive applications to items long in existence that no one had thought of before in using them. On top of that, he figured out a way to get Galactus over a barrel and how to bring death to a universe where everything was in a constant state of growth. The man's one slick mofo.
But here's where Thanos gets the edge - and it is an important edge. It's all in the philosophy. See, Orion is all about winning and winning straight-out. He's going to want to do battle with Thanos and beat him with all of the righteous indignation that he can muster. Thanos, on the other hand, has always had a very different definition of victory. He's willing to kill everything in the universe just to achieve his aims. Hell, he's proven numerous times that he's willing to suicide to achieve some ultimate aim.
It's analogous to the problem facing many of the soldiers in the Middle East right now. How do you beat someone who, if you kill them, they get what they want and are seen as heroes and if you don't, will kill you and get seen as heroes? Orion could probably beat Thanos every day of the week in an arm-wrestling contest, but that's not going to matter if the guy whose arm you just pushed to the table was just waiting for the chance to kick you in the nuts under the table while you were closing in on victory.
Thanos wins this by completely changing the game and thinking in a much larger scale than ol' Orion.
The match is over but do this for Orion vs Silver Surfer.
Zechs wrote:Let's see. Orion killed Darkseid. Thanos is a weak sauce version of Darkseid. How is this a fair fight again? For all his cunning Darkseid died by his son's hand. Same fate befalls grape face. Orion destroys Thanos.
That's a common misconception.
Starlin has gone on record as stating that Thanos was always meant to be an amalgamation of Darkseid and Metron.
Thanos. We already eliminated the guys who might have had a shot to win (Quasar and Worldmind Nova Prime), and even then they would need some kind of intervention to make it a sure thing.

I'll vote for Thanos after ignoring the early rounds.
Well I know he made it to the second round by being more able than Annihilus (that still hurts to say), but yeah I figured he'd be out by this point.
Still, at least a real cosmic power is taking him out and not some rent-a-cop with a ring that looks like it came out of a box of Frankenberry, amirite?

Thanos >>> Darkseid
FACT.
HA! This is the greatest cosmic being?
THIS?! A being bested by Squirrel Girl and knocked around by Hellcat?! To which I humbly retort:
Name the worse moment of Darkseid and I can name a hundred more Thanos moments which where lower. Name four Thanos stories and I stay to thee they are nothing compared to Kirby run or Great Darkness Saga. The closest you can say to a horrible Darkseid moments is the Bryne story from his Superman run or Countdown. Morrison's Darkseid is alright, but not horrible. In his early appearances Darkseid kicked ass and did for quite a long time. Thanos on the other hand...
Thanos isn't worthy to lick his own blood off Orion's heel. And if that all wasn't enough to tip Darkseid over you have this:

I can't say it. It's too horrible. Zechs...is...not...wrong...

... and which of the two was finally defeated by a sing-a-long ?

Hey it took him to get shot with a magic bullet by Batman, lassoed by Wonderwoman so he could be run over by death itself, and THEN after all was finally put away via high sonic from Superman.

So what you're saying, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that the final defeat of Darkseid was something between this...

The Starlin/Giffen Thanos series was the jumping off point for Annihilation, the best event that either company has put out in close to a decade and is better than anything you've listed (and including the JLA/Avengers crossover was weak).
Thanos has been used far better than Darkseid has, which is why Marvel cosmic is currently so much better than DC cosmic.
