Doctor Horrible II

Postby Amoebas » Sat Apr 23, 2011 11:02 am

Just came across this...

In a recent interview for the New York Times "Arts Beat" column, Joss Whedon let slip that work is being done on a sequel to Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, saying that "We’ve got several songs near completion and we’ve got a very specific structure." Whedon said that doing a continuation of his cult webseries is definitely something he "has his heart into," but it's all a matter of having enough time:

"We’ve just all got jobs. And it’s not like Neil, Nathan and Felicia ain’t busy either. We get together at Christmas and family occasions, and then play each other our partial songs and go, “Yup, that’s still exactly as it was the last time we played it. We’re great.” It’s bad."

What with his work in the upcoming Avengers movie, as well as staying very much involved with the Buffy and Angel comics at Dark Horse, it's not surprising that he's feeling the time crunch!

Whedon also joked that the title of the Dr. Horrible sequel would be called “Dr. Horrible and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," but he should know better than to scare us poor Geeks like that.

I think a sequel is kinda hard with the way things ended. Also, it'd ruin all the cool ambiguity surrounding the ending.

Someone (I forget who, but I think I read it here or on talk@ depending on when dr. horrible launched.) proposed the "triumph" montage at the end wasn't real and he was actually just sitting there in his hoody crying cause she died for no reason. I liked that reading.

I can see liking it, but that's not what they showed. I mean, it wasn't really ambiguous... it's like if someone said "I liked it better if she didn't die. Maybe that part wasn't real, it was a hallucination he had"... :smt102

But that doesn't work. The triumph montage at the end was intnded to show that he had become the toast of the Super-Villain community as he had planned bt that the 'victory' was entirely pyrrhic and therefore meaningless to him. Her death meant that he lost verything that actually mattered in the end.

It's actually kind of a classic Marvel-style Super-Villain origin story.

Here lies everything, the world I wanted
At my feet! My victory's complete!
So Hail to the King! (Chorus: Everything you ever..)
Arise and si - ng!

So your world's benign, so you think Justice has a voice,
and we all have a choi - ce,
Well, now your world is mine! (Chorus: Everything you ever..)
And I am fi - ne!

Now the nightmare's real! Now Dr. Horrible is he - re!
To make you quake with fe - ar,
To make the whole world kneel! (Chorus: Everything you ever..)
And I won't fe - el

A thing.

Even the lyrics make it pretty clear that he does get "everything he ever wanted" but without Penny he's dead inside.

AUSTIN, Texas — Joss Whedon may be the new hardest-working man in show business. The director, who’s about to unleash The Avengers and is putting the finishing touches on his whirlwind production of Much Ado About Nothing, plans to produce a new installment of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog very soon.

Whedon said he’d like to begin work on the next installment of the supervillain musical farce this summer.

“We are hard on it. It’s been a really tough year — couple of years — partially, I’m happy to say, because of work,” Whedon told Wired during an interview at the South by Southwest Film festival, where he was promoting over-the-top horror-comedy The Cabin in the Woods (more from that interview to come).

The original Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog was created by Whedon, his brothers Jed and Zack, and Jed’s wife, Maurissa Tancharoen, during the 2007-2008 writer’s strike. Shot quickly and on a low budget, then released online in three parts, the miniseries racked up awards, spawned comic books and was eventually released on DVD.

Fans have been salivating for a sequel ever since. And although Whedon’s been very busy since the strike ended, he said progress is being made on the new Doctor Horrible.

“We do have a number of songs written,” he said. “We have a whole outline.”

“Neil has been like, ‘How long?’ We’re all just sort of waiting, but the waiting will stop.”
Dr. Horrible, which became an internet sensation when it hit the web, starred Neil Patrick Harris as the eponymous doctor and aspiring supervillian. Firefly’s Nathan Fillion played Captain Hammer, the doctor’s nemesis, and The Guild star Felicia Day played Penny, the girl of both their dreams.

Whedon, who didn’t offer much detail on the plot of the new iteration of the web series, said the biggest roadblock to unleashing a Dr. Horrible sequel — besides his need to get back into songwriting mode — has been aligning everyone’s schedules for the next installment of the indie hit.

“We’re stuck, basically, at this one part in the process,” Whedon said. “All of us are looking at this summer as the time when we can go, ‘Hey, you know what? We’ve got a little free time, let’s get unstuck.’ Neil has been like, ‘How long?’ We’re all sort of just waiting, but the waiting will stop.”

Anyone else as excited about the prospect as we are?

Gotta give Whedon credit, I'm sure there are more lucrative uses for his time.

Loved the first one.
