Do we hate good comics? Yes, yes we do.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R Agents #8
as selected by Victorian Squid

Written by NICK SPENCER • Art by CAFU and BIT; Cover by FIONA STAPLES

The Iron Maiden attacks the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents' headquarters, determined to take control of their supercomputer called Daniel. How much of life is fate and how much chance? Daniel may have the answers, and Iron Maiden is willing to kill anyone to learn them. That won't stop the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, though – being willing to die is literally part of the gig!
DC Universe 32pg. Color $2.99 US

Stephen Day, Hostage of Canada's Postal Service has next week's pick.

If you would like to join the group, it's easy. Just post a review and I'll add you to the member's list. As long as you stay active, eventually it will be your turn to make a pick.

With $4 comics becoming the norm, the economy being what it is and the growing popularity of mail order services the Review Group recognizes that it's becoming harder and harder to commit to participating each and every week. As long as you can post one review per calendar month you will stay in the member's list. It doesn't matter if you post your review the week of it's release or if you post it later. There is no such thing as a "late" review.

The only request I make is that if you don't plan on posting a review or if you're going to be posting late is that you drop a note in the thread so that I can keep track of who is active and who isn't. The Spreadsheet of Doom is thorough, but it can't read your mind.

Image
Comics are to be scored on a scale from 1-10. 1 being suck, 10 being a damn good comic. Beyond that, there's no right or wrong.

Image
If it's your week, you must announce your selection by 5pm EST the day Diamond releases it's shipping list. If you do not announce your pick at that time, I will add a poll to the thread that will remain open until 12pm EST so that the group can make the selection for that week. (If you're seriously MIA, I'll probably put the poll up sooner) To ensure that you know it's your week, I will PM you when Midtown's list goes live on Thursdays. Also you'd better keep in mind the Amber Atoms rule, if your pick isn't reviewed by 2 or more people you will be exiled from the Group for 1 year. Our definition of a single issue comic is limited to comics listed at $3.99 or lower, anything above that is off limits. Also, to prevent utter filth being chosen deliberately, the Weird Worlds Rule has also gone into affect. Any book scoring a new all-time low (2.12 as of today) will not count as a miss if people wisely choose not to purchase it. Any poor soul who did review the book will earn a free pass on a book of their choice.

I didn't bring the SoD to work with me, so you'll have to wait a bit before seeing last week's score. Please refer to the link below if you wish to look at past selections. The old list is a few posts down.

Will the curse of the We Hate Comics group render our third St Nick pick this month as bad as the other 2?

THUNDER AGENTS #8

I've heard a lot of great things about this book but never bought an issue until now. I'm glad I did. LOVED LOVED LOVED the artwork and the story, for me, was very easy to get into. This is one of those obviously solid books that deserves an even bigger following then it has.

I think I found a new book to buy in trades! Thank you for this choice, it was a great one.

Story: 8
Art: 10
My Score: 9

Okay, two things:

#1, that was GREAT!

#2, it can totally be read as a stand-alone single issue and doesn't spoil anything in the first arc itself, and nothing you wouldn't have seen coming anyway in #7 i.e. the nature of Colleen's relationship with Iron Maiden and the earlier Dynamo.

The interplay between the three stories is great, and the way the three artists portray three different points in TA history works well. Mike Grell is so perfect for the scenes in the 1980s and Nick Dragotta does the Silver Age 1960s-era absolutely right. I can see why St Nick says those Silver Age scenes took so long to write, and you can really feel the way he fretted over each word to get it just how he wanted it to feel. It's just right. It's so cool. I hope there's more of Dragotta and Spencer's Silver Age next issue too. Dan Panosian does a fine job depicting the modern-day, with only Colleen represented there actually as the Agents appear only in flashback this issue, and he makes both the redheads, mother and daughter, seem sexy and dangerous. I liked Fiona Staples' cover too, only I thought the TA logo should have been colored to be more offset from the similar-toned background behind it. That's the only real criticism I have of this issue. It was well-done all around by everyone involved, and St Nick's investment in the book and its characters strongly comes across when you read it. I never doubted for a second that picking T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #8 would deliver a top notch single-issue for the Review Group. I thought this was one of the best issues of the run so far, too!

Like the quote on the cover says, "If you haven't jumped on yet, now's the time."

And thanks to everyone who gives the book a chance this week, you are awesome!

10

*Also I recommend the earlier THUNDER Agents runs as well if you can find them or the Archive Editions at a decent price.

Also, you can't go wrong with Witchdoctor #1 either, it's another book this week worth checking out.

Indeed. I'm encouraged by news that this will continue into the NuDC.

(I do have to give a shout out to Vinnie B. as he put this book up as a "try it, and if you hate it, I'll refund it" book. I was skeptical, he was right.)
