The Indy 5-Ohh!: Jim Mahfood of Tr!ckster

Postby LOLtron » Tue Jul 05, 2011 1:32 pm

New Outhouse Feature!  Indy Hunter interviews the hottest indy creators starting with Jim Mahmood of Tri!ckster.

The Indy 5-Ohh! is a five question focus on various independent creators old school and nu-school, up and coming, or putting it down! This column promises to bring you the artists you know and love, or never even heard of.

Jim Mahfood's original claim to fame was working on comic book properties/projects such as "The Generation X Underground Special," and the first "Clerks" comics by writer Kevin Smith. His own properties of notoriety include "Grrrl Scouts" and other 40 oz. Comic collections. Jim has often reinvented his exposure to both underground and mainstream populace through his live mural art and Colt 45 oz. malt liquor design work. Chances are you've seen a piece of Mahfood art, or have even worn one!"

Indy Hunter: SO, QUESTION NO. 1 AND IT COVERS SOMETHING IN MY OPINION THAT'S ABOUT TO BE BIG! WHAT EXACTLY IS TR!CKSTER AND HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?

BlackBeltBeeJim Mahfood: TR!CKSTER is an indy collective of artists and badass mother fuckers. Creative people that are doing their own thing. It makes it's debut next month at the same time as Comic-Con. It will be at the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center at 200 Harbor Dr., Suite 120 from July 19-24. The full schedule is here:

http://trickstertrickster.com/about/

It came about very simply. About five years ago or so Comic-Con became a mainstream movie/TV/video game con. All of us doing our art felt pushed away so instead of bitching about it we decided to do our own thing. It's an alternative for the people. They can go to Comic-Con and do their thing and then they can come check out TR!CKSTER For free. It's fun!

HunterMiceBlindThreeGirlsIH: WHO'S INVOLVED?

JM: There's so many amazing people to mention, I don't want to leave anyone out. The full line-up is right here:

http://trickstertrickster.com/artists/

IH: DO YOU THINK THIS IS THE START OF A NEW MOVEMENT THAT'LL BRING THE INDY COMICS TO THE FOREFRONT OF MAINSTREAM AWARENESS?

JM: I wouldn't say indy comics, but more like indy art, indy awareness as a whole, you know? People doing creator-owned stuff and presenting it in their own unique way. It's exciting. I think with TR!CKSTER and Comic-Con going on at the same time you get the best of both worlds.

IH: IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, MANY OF YOUR ARTISTS ARE THE BACKBONE OF THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY. ALL THE SHOES, CLOTHING LINES, SPORTS DRINKS, MUSIC VIDEOS ETC. ARE SERVED BEST WHEN THEY INCORPORATE YOURS AND YOUR FELLOW ARTISTS'S WORK.

HunterMMCoverColorJM: I couldn't agree more with your statement there. Most of the artists involved are not restricted to one medium or way of expression. That's what makes it so diverse and cool. Me personally, I dabble in comics, illustration, advertising, murals, fine art, animation, live art in nightclubs, and custom body-painting.

IH: NOW TO YOUR OWN WORK. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON THAT'LL BE AT TR!CKSTER?

JM: I have two new limited edition custom toys making their debut there. The first is the Black Belt Bee, sculpted by my pal George Gaspar from October Toys, and put out by the fine folks at 3D Retro (3dretro.com). This a sleek alternate version of my famous Beat Bee toy, complete with cassette tape and full-color box with my art on it. The second toy is the super limited Smoke Dog One-Color Funk Figure. It's sculpted by my homie Scott Wilkowski from Waxbean Studio (waxbeanstudio.com). We are literally only going to have 10 copies of each color, so this toy is super rare and totally awesome. I'll also have my brand new shirt, Mice Blind (Three), put out by The Brothers Ink (thebrothersink.com), And it will be available in two different colors, one for guys and one for girls.

HunterTank_Girl_4ColorWhiteIH: WHAT'S THE LATEST COMIC WORK WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU?

Well, MarijuanaMan, the one-shot hardcover graphic novel I did with Ziggy Marley and Joe Casey is still available from Image Comics. I do a free weekly autobio comic called Los Angeles Ink Stains that people can check out on my blog: www.foodoneart.blogspot.com. And my next major comic project is illustrating the new Tank Girl graphic novel. It's written by original co-creator Alan C. Martin and it's basically a dream gig for me. It will be out in late 2012.

IH: ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DO THAT YOU STILL HAVEN'T DONE YET IN LIFE?

JM: Successfully swim with sharks.

IH: BONUS QUESTION! WHAT'S THE SOUNDTRACK TO THIS INTERVIEW?

JM: I have to listen to jazz or instrumental stuff when I write so I've been playing Quincy Jones & Bill Cosby: the Original Jam Sessions 1969 from Concord Records. Pure instrumental jazz/funk bliss.

Thanks guys. If there's any other of your Indy creators or artist alley denizens you'd like to hear from, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
