The trouble with Wally West

Postby KING King Impulse » Thu Sep 22, 2011 4:31 pm

I've been thinking a lot about how we haven't seen anything to do with Wally West in the DCnU, and I think that might be because he just isn't around.

Francis Manapul has confirmed that Barry did die saving the world. Whether or not that was the Crisis or not is unknown, but I believe another book made reference to COIE.

Barry's only been the Flash for five years, in that time he's died and come back, did he have any time to recruit a sidekick?

At what point in this five years did he die? At what point did he come back? If Wally was The Flash, it wasn't for a substantial period of time.

How old is Wally West? He needs to be young enough to be Kid Flash, but old enough to be accepted as The Flash when Barry dies. Say, he joins Barry six months in for argument's sake. I reckon he'd have to at least be about 16 when he becomes Kid Flash, and then only about 18/19 when he becomes The Flash.

His best friend is Dick Grayson, who is now 21, so we're assuming Wally would be a peer.

What about his kids? I think if Wally were to show up, he definitely wouldn't be married to Linda and Jai and Iris definitely wouldn't exist.

Barry Allen isn't dating Iris West in the DCnU, but its through Iris that he meets Wally and that Wally becomes Kid Flash. How do you even begin to explain that?

Thinking about it, Bart Allen definitely exists, but he is Barry and Iris' grandson born in the future brought back in time by Iris to save his life. What is his relation to an unmarried Barry and Iris in the DCU?

I think I may have just proved to myself that its impossible for Wally West to exist in the DCnU. Furthermore, I think the easiest way to explain Bart Allen is to make him Barry's nephew and give him Wally's origin. I don't like this, I'm not happy about any of it, but I just don't see how Wally West can fit into the DCnU.

Bart's still from the future. Wally West is in Earth-2.

Dan DiDio mentioned it on his Facebook page around the time of JSA title getting announced. Someone asked him "You covered the JSA, now what about Wally West" and his response was "Keystone City is on Earth-2. ;)"

If I had to throw a guess out, I'd bet that Donna's over there too.

i think you're taking that out of context, Blue. wasn't that question partly about Jay too, and that's where the Keystone reference came from?

Setting the five year timeline they're making things seem impossible.

The trouble with Wally West is they neutered him. Once they did that, he became uninteresting and redundant.

I still maintain that Tom Peyer did a fantastic job in his short lived run that was cut before he had a chance to really go anywhere with it.

Nope.

Took me a bit to find the reference but the exact comment was "We want Wally West back as the Keystone Flash!" and DiDio's reply was "Hmmmmm, I think Keystone is back on Earth-2."

DiDio usually hints about these things or straight up says them on his facebook page at time. Chances are Wally's on Earth-2.

Only doing a partial reboot makes everything impossible.

The JLI has never worked together, but Batman trusts Booster and none of the GL books were reset, even though those last two things directly connect to the JLI.

Ted Kord never was around, but Infinite Crisis has to have happened for Batman to trust Booster.

Wally West never existed, or played a really small role, but Hal was still evil and Barry still died, even though Wally was involved with all of that.

Flashpoint happened, as seen in Legion Lost, but again Wally never existed or never did anything big, even though he's needed to cause the stuff to bring Barry back to cause that to happen.

Brightest Day and Alec Holland's resurrection happened, which means Blackest Night happened, which means the JSA was around, but they don't seem to have ever existed. And if Brightest Day happened, then Generation Lost would have had to have occurred, but that didn't happen.

All the Batman Inc stuff happened, Damien exists, Jason exists, Tim exists, Dick exists, the New Teen Titans era happened, but not really.

It's a giant fucking mess that makes no fucking sense.

One thing I realised was that Cry For Justice, the Star City disaster and the Oliver Queen we're used to were all kinda essential to a lot Brightest Day and Swamp Thing's return.

Yep, but none of that happened, but other parts of Brightest Day like the Firestorm stuff and Swamp Thing's return and Sinestro as a GL all happened.

I hope if Wally does come back they've erased his kids, they ruined him as a character, made him too old.

or you could read that as Didio implying "well, you're probably not going to get what you want b/c Keystone's on Earth-2, not Earth-1, and Earth-2 is Jay's world".

never put it past Didio to be a complete schmuck, either.
